Interesting lead in the NBR about Voda selling NZ business.

Voda parent company under pressure to focus on 'core' services - follows other sales of Voda's businesses across the world

Like the rubbish speculation over the last few years that Theresa Gattung would be forced to resign...Wink

For what it's worth, the NBR article observes:

The NZ mobile market is saturated and growth is slowing

The market is facing regulation

Other markets are more attractive for deploying assets with growth potential e.g. India

NZ opportunites are tiny compared to other markets

Vodafone may wish to exit while its ahead (of regulation)

Vodafone struggles in Australia (i.e. what's the point unless you're number one or two?)

Telstra needs a mobile network in New Zealand to be competitive

Two of the exec team of six have resigned

But the speculative conclusion that Voda might be looking to sell is rubbish. Apparently.

From the Herald web site:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/3/story.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10440441

Vodafone New Zealand external communications manager Elinore Wellwood said the company was not for sale.

"There's no truth in the rumour," she said.

That's a pity then...

A new owner might do more to look after their long-suffering customers Tongue out

I think you're probably right it being rubbish but don't agree that it's something that comes up every 6 months

any proof of this?

I think the "every 6 months" might have been a bit of a throw away line by johnr but it's certainly something that had been reported numerous times by the media over recent years.

Lets look at reporting of the NBR story

New Zealand's National Business Review reported that Vodafone, the largest mobile phone operator in New Zealand, was looking to exit the market amid a tighter regulatory environment. The report cited an unnamed industry source.
"It's not implausible, there's constant exploration by companies of their strategic options," said an analyst, who did not want to be named.

Why do analysts never want to be named when their stories turn out to be nothing more than rumor?

Every business is for sale for the right amount of money.

Reporters stories are 1% fact, 99% fluff most of the time :)

Of course, who knows.. maybe they are for sale.  But there is probably buisiness sensitive stuff involved if they are.
So if that's the case they would hardly admit to any such thing as a sale of Vodafone.

Hypothetically speaking I think Vodafone would struggle to find a buyer if they were to try and sell their South Pacific interests. Any such sale would more than likely involve all 3 networks - while logic would dictate both Singtel and Telstra would love to have the NZ business it's highly unlikely the ACCC would let either Singtel or Telstra have the Australian network. Who would really want to buy a mobile phone network that has 19% market share in a very competitive marketplace and what would happen to Fiji?
