Hi

Wife on phone today waiting to speak to someone from a Company...Music playing while she is waiting and waiting and waiting.
She said to me It would be great if you could push a button and put the phone down and do other stuff, and when someone answered at the other end it would beep so you could then go and pick it up and speak to them.

So could it be done.

And yes you could just get a phone with a speaker phone.

... but who wants to listen to their music anyway!  As an electronic engineer, I think it would be hard to do reliably.  You would have to detect when there is a break in the music, but often the music itself would have a break when it repeats.

If a company expects me to hold on for more than 5 minutes, I put the phone down.  Amazingly, yesterday Manukau City Council answered within 3 rings and never needed to transfer me to another person!

I give up after 5 mins and call back later, if still taking more then 5 mins to get an answer I send an email/fax asking them to call back to explain why I cant call them and with details of my issues so that they can get someone that can sort it to call back, when that gets nowhere (telstraclear seem to have a black hole faxmachine) I send angry letters to directors.

Sorry not really at this stage, a number of reasons mainly as it is not really a service, as you would probably find that as soon as the rep actually answered the phone and you weren't there they would hang up :), best bet is to use a speaker phone, I did this recently when on hold for compass for 45 minutes Laughing
