TelstraClear has doubled the speed of two of its most popular InHome broadband plans.

The free speed increase raises downstream speeds on the 5 GB plan from up to 2 Mbps to up to 4 Mbps, and the 20 GB plan from up to 4 Mbps to up to 10 Mbps. The plans are available to homes on TelstraClear’s InHome network in Wellington, Kapiti and Christchurch.

TelstraClear Head of Consumer Steve Jackson says customers on the 5 GB and 20 GB plans will be automatically upgraded to the new speeds.

"This is great for our customers and they don’t need to do anything. They’ll notice everything gets a lot faster - for free. On our 5 GB plan alone, more than 12,000 customers will reap the benefits of an increase in speed. Who wouldn’t want at least twice the speed for no increase in price?"

Mr Jackson says the company was noticing a change in customer behaviour, with customers wanting to optimise their broadband experience for things such as streaming video.

"We’re staying ahead of the game, offering customers plans to suit their needs. An increase in speed makes surfing the Internet, downloading music and videos and playing online games easier than ever before."

"Customers on our 5 GB and 20 GB plans will be able to download their favourite television programme such as Shortland Street from sites like TVNZ ondemand in half the time."

The 20 GB plan is now in line with the company’s top-of-the-range LightSpeed plans by offering downstream speeds of up to 10 Mbps.

Existing customers will receive the new speeds by 1 August 2007.

TelstraClear’s InHome six broadband plans include:

HighSpeed 1G - 1G of monthly traffic - 2Mbps downstream / 2 Mbps upstream *
HighSpeed 5G - 5G of monthly traffic - 4 Mbps downstream / 2 Mbps upstream *
HighSpeed 10G - 10G of monthly traffic - 4 Mbps downstream / 2 Mbps upstream $49.95 per month
LightSpeed 20G - 20G of monthly traffic - 10 Mbps downstream / 2 Mbps upstream $69.95 per month
LightSpeed 40G - 40G of monthly traffic - 10 Mbps downstream / 2 Mbps upstream $99.95 per month

LightSpeed 80G - 80G of monthly traffic - 10 Mbps downstream/2 Mbps upstream $139.95 per month

* TelstraClear HighSpeed Internet is only available as part of a package including a phone line on the
HighSpeed 1G ($62.90 per month including phone) and 5G ($72.90 per month including phone) plans.

That sure is great news...

It would be great if existing 10Mbps users were automatically bumped up to 25Mbps for free once it's available!

Yep... TelstraClear confirmed last month the long rumoured 25 Mbps plans... No word on when they'd be available, but sooner the better!

Have you approached the developers to ask? I've heard of several cases over the years where developers of new subdivisions haven't been interested in letting both telcos run cables.

funny.. i was told my 10mbit plan was activated last night (20gb) and speed was in effect as of this morning / last night

i try to use my internet today and its still at 4mbit

i noticed TelstraClear said 'Existing customers will receive the new speeds by 1 August 2007.'
but i was told the speed change took effect last night too ?

, even funnier i now have THREE different accounts under my usage meter ??

HighSpeed Service xxxxxxxxxxx
HighSpeed 20G ( current from 25-Jul-2007 )

HighSpeed Service xxxxxxxxx
HighSpeed 20G ( current from 24-Jul-2007 )

HighSpeed Service xxxxxxx
HighSpeed 10G ( 03-Jul-2006 - 24-Jul-2007 )

two makes sense.. but 3 ? the top one has used 1mb traffic, second one seems to read realistically

TelstraClear its SO frustrating trying to ring your helpdesk and try to get through but told to wait an hour, theres no way im doing that at this time of night !!

If you're still not seeing the speed increase then something *may* have gone awry, you will need to test it another couple of times (different times of the day) to see if it's the case.  If there's no change then call TelstraClear back to check it has actually been upgraded.

Yes, you'll see 2 or 3 different meters until they 'roll off'.  I've had this before and currently have the same issue as I've upgraded from the 40g plan to the 80g plan.

Cheers,
ZollyMonsta

yes but why 3 and not just two ? two would be logical ..

are you saying that the modem 'MAY' run at 4mbit at some times? and this is acceptable? or ..

trying to call TelstraClear's helpdesk is a complete waste of time to be honest.. it would be faster to sit here chanting at the modem i feel

There's 3 because you've been on 3 different plans this month. You upgraded from the 10GB plan to the 20GB plan, and then you got upgraded again to a new plan - 20GB with 10mpbs.
Have you restarted your cable modem since the upgrade? That seems to be necessary to pick up the new speed increase.

lol um wtf ???

of course i powercycled the modem, they also rebooted the modem for me when it was upgraded

i went from the 10gb plan straight to the 20gb 10mbit plan, AFAIK its not actually possible for them to switch users to the '20gb 4mbit' plan

Reaperz, I hear the native wellingtonians "10mbit cable dance" works. Might want to give that a try?
