Hey all,

So, I was contemplating shifting to Xnet as I like the simplicity of the plans and I've had good experience with their helpdesk (I've setup three friends on the service). One thing that is stopping me is the static IP usage policy.

With my current provider I have a static IP and reverse DNS setup. I run a mail server and a development web server that face the 'net (I work from home). This appears to be against the usage policy which is a bit of a problem for me.

I can understand the reasoning behind the policy due to people setting up open relays, FTP/HTTP dump sites etc. but is this a firm policy? Is it ever relaxed for people that know what they are doing (I admin servers for others) and are using it legitimately?

Hi Hads,

Applying for a Static IP in most circumstances is not a problem, as long as you are using it for legitimate purposes we will generally accept your request, we have had cases were people have used their Static IP Addresses to host illegal content, this is why we ask users to agree to terms and conditions beforehand. It is also worth mentioning that if you intend to run a Mail System you would need to be very careful that it is configured correctly due to our very tough policy regarding Spam.

At this point in time we are not changing Reverse DNS entries however we do have plans to offer some limited options for this in the future, there is a lot of management and checking that needs to be done to ensure that all changes to DNS are legitimate and are provisioned correctly.

Understandable. I did apply for one for a friend who I setup so I could remotely manage their box via SSH and it was accepted quickly. I was just dubious as mail server are specifically mentioned on that page as being not allowed.

You need to be very careful running a mail server regardless of your ISPs policies :)

Fair enough. It's pretty useful for running a mail server so I guess I'll hold off for a while. If you happen to have a list of people that you're going to let know when this happens please add me to it.
