Hi

I understand that you can take your...in my case a SPA2102 with you...to use to make calls. The question is do I need a laptop
as well, or can I just take along my little gray box and just plug into a broadband connection say from a hotel, then plug in the
hotel phone.

Yes you can I do it myself, most hotels have a logon screen first, so you would plug your laptop into the lan, wan goes to the Hotel , sign up for the day and then away you go should be all good, however Hotel Phones are usallly digital and won't work on your 2102 .

So I need a laptop then ? The problem is I don't have a laptop so it won't work without a laptop ?

Yes generally, hotels require you to logon to the network first and sign up before they allow internet access, the only way to do that is to have a PC / Laptop to plug into the connection in your hotel room , other wise anyone could just logon and use the the net, and you know how much hotels hate to give away free stuff....

get an el-cheapo one, off trade me, or a new one for sub-$1000 which still good for most things to do. Alternatively, you can use a WWAN router, and with your VFX plug and you got yourself a mobile "home" network :-D

You don't have to pay for hotel internet access and you don't need a laptop once you got the WWAN AP set up.

Internet is my backyard...

Well you will need either Telecom's Data Card, or Vodafone's Connect Card, and a Wireless WAN router, where you plug either of the PCMCIA card into it. Set it up like a router, and then you can bring it along wherever you go, as long as there's CDMA or UMTS/HSDPA coverage.

It's not a free, but if you want to avoid the purchase and lugging a laptop around, this probably be ideal.
