So I've finally got around to enabling G.722 on my home PABX (which connects to the outside world on OpenVFX) as well as a customer's PABX (SIP trunk to CallPlus).

On testing, I was disappointed to find calls between me and them fell back to G.711a so I did a little playing around to see where the fallback was. I expected it to be the peering between WxC and CP but was a little surprised that a "control test" I did also sort-of failed.

I called WxC's numbers (0800 123456 and 950 1300) and got the recorded welcome message in G.711a down the trunk (checked by running "sip show channels" on the Asterisk console). But when I made a typo and missed an 0 in 0800, I got Neil Waka telling me to check my number in clear crisp HD (so I know that bit is working).

How wide is G722 support, especially between carriers, and does WxC's own sales/helpdesk line support it?

I am a little surprised to only get G.711 to WxC's own support line though.

We have been supporting G722 for years and it is offered to all our SIP interconnects , unfortunately Callplus don't seem to support it even when offered to them even though you may it configured on your trunk with them, we see a lot of lower quality codecs being connected even when higher quality codecs are offered by us.

The support desk at this stage don't have G722 capable phones but will in the future, give me a call and we can chat on G722 and video if you have that :)

It's unfortunate some providers are not making use of the great audio qualities that G722 offers, it's a slow path for a number of providers it seems

There is SIP peering with a few providers now but the vast majority of connectivity between providers in NZ is still via the PSTN, ie G711a

Depending on what version of Asterisk you're running and how you have it configured you can also run into transcoding issues as Asterisk has to bridge the 2 parts of the call (extension to Asterisk and Asterisk to WxC). This can mean your phone uses G.722 to Asterisk which then uses G.711a for the call to WxC and then once this is bridged it'll transcode G.711a to G.722

A little off topic, but how do you determine if you send a call via the IP interconnect or out via the PSTN? Number ranges?

Parties that have local interconnect agreements will pass local and ported numbers between themselves and that generally will not go via the PSTN sS7 network

Hm thanks for that ... I may have to call CP tomorrow and ask them why it isn't working at their end. Their SIP trunk brochure lists G.722 as supported in the FAQ on the last page, and when calling me from this customer, the trunk is initially G.722 (so looks like they do support it internally-ish) then falls back when I pick up my end.

Okay, so what's happening is, calls to your number with Callplus is going via the PSTN, I'm assuming it's a ported number ?
So no G722 will be offered via the PSTN as its not capable of HD voice (if only Spark had 21st century switches).

The inbound call from Callplus to a WXC number comes via our SIP interconnect with Callplus but unfortunately there is no g722 at all in the SDP so they look to be stripping it out , G711a is the preferred offered codec from them

So the sharing of ported numbers with CallPlus only goes one way? Yep both numbers are ported, theirs being then-Telecom, mine many years ago from Woosh.

for that number range yes , we don't do a lot to directly to Callplus, we actually get less issues that way

heh I actually meant the other way around, ie CP know that my 940 number is with you, not Woosh, ie you are sharing that info with them, but they aren't sharing their ported numbers with you?

(not that it helped them get G.722 through, but anyway...)
