Here is my current Telco spend

36 TCNZ POTS {wgtn}
39 Xnet River 5Gb
20 VF Get 70
95 per month total

Now if I compare to VF

41 VF/Ihug Homeline
10 To top up 12 months free broadband offer to 5Gb
20 VF You Choose 20
71 per month total

That a difference of $288 per annum for the same service, the only gotcha is that I have to commit to VF for 12 months on everything :-( but I can exit for $199 early termination

What have WxC got coming to make me hang on other than very good customer service ?

I'm I missing something here ?

Its only valid for 12 months, while WorldxChange prices will be constant.

Add in that You Choose has high per minute charges (ie. Choose 20 = $1 a minute more or less) compared to the Off peak plan that you are on. You could probably counteract that with an addon but remember that the choose plan has a contract of its own.

At the end of 12 months he can disconnect and go to the provider of his choice however.

Slingshot are offering Naked DSL for $79.95 per month including 6GB, FS/FS connection and iTalk.

This would save you $15 per month compared to your current spend, and give you the bonus of FS Upload (nice to have when sending large file attachments or uploading via FTP).

It is reasonable to assume that WxC will have a similar offering which is only going to cost $9 per month more than the Vodafone/iHug deal AND you get the benefit of FS upload. In addition to that, you get 5c per minute National Toll Calls and 30c per minute calls to mobiles at any time of day or night, which may be a benefit, or may not, depending on your calling patterns.

Just my 2c worth anyway...

I suspect WxC has not yet released their pricing so that competitors do not know what they are up to. Everyone is setting their pricing and making it known, but if WxC holds out a bit and then come in cheaper then it will be too late for others to change their pricing (they will be too slow).

At the moment I do not see much reason to go nDSL + VFX either apart from simplifying bills I need to pay and great customer service, but I will do it anyway as I do not have any problems with WxC and as said it will simplify my bills. I will also support a good company.

Remember what happened with Go Large? Everyone jumped on the band wagon and then the network could not support it. It will happen again in other forms with other ISPs (i.e. not just Telecom) especially when you get marketing like "free broadband for a year". As seen last month, WxC has already upgraded their systems in anticipation of future requirements.

That's my 2c.

Good point WxC being cautious and waiting but if they wait too long they may loose customers. Accordingly WxC better annouce something soon I'm not going to spend an additional $288 per annum if I don't have to

I'll wait some news from WxC I hope they are reading this

I am waiting to see what all are offering .I think Telecom will have something up their sleeve as will World exchange and others. Meantime I may be paying $20 too much but i am not locked in to anybody. cheers George

In the not to distant future I assure you, you just have to rememeber that the full pricing is NOT avialable yet to us, so we don't want to set false expectations, theres been enough of that lately according to some

otherwise we just get into a big crying match if we picked wrong (sorry couldn't resist that), once we have it all comfirmed it will be out there trust me.

As for the locking into the deals at present, these are generally just company tactics with companies that don't have a viable Naked DSL offering I'm picking, kinda like a land grab.

btw Slingshot and italk charge for the data for your Voip Calls so it does come off your data cap and I'm pretty sure the reliabilty factor of our VOIP network is without par, but I'm pretty biased on that and also havn't seen anybody go from VFX to italk at present but seen an awful lot of customers come the other way ......happy to be corrected on the issue or discuss the merits of both services

Also I think it's totally up to you as a customer as to what you want in the way of services, being locked into a POTS line maybe with a basic data cap may fine for people, but for other that want to go to the next level of technology and want some intelligent services will be looking for other options, it comes down to what best suits you as a customer and only you can decide that.

And yes we are watching always

My thoughts basically go to the quality of the broadband. My family were with ihug for 8 years before switching to WxC and we haven't looked back. While it was more than a year ago since we made the switch, and ihug may have fixed some of their issues, the service was so stunningly bad that I really wouldn't ever look back.

As a few examples:
I run several Linux boxes at home - Gentoo on my server, (currently k)ubuntu on my laptop, and (at the time) Debian on my desktop. As you can imagine, this means several different FTP repositories to drag updates off. The issue was that no matter which FTP I went to - Citylink, Planetmirror, Recoil, wherever - I was capped at 5kBps downstream. Nationally or internationally. When I called ihug (and waited 45 minutes on the phone - there's only so much Crowded House I can listen to!), I was assured there was no issue and basically fobbed off. That was a nuisance.
What really got me though was the fact that our ping would be too high for my Dad to play online chess. Seriously. I mean, you know something's pretty seriously wrong when that's happening...

So anyway, we switched to WxC when I started working here and haven't looked back. I think what I really like though is that the plan we started on hasn't changed; meanwhile, ihug's BB3 plan has degraded in quality 3 times in the past year.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you might pay a little extra, but the quality of the offering is substantially higher with WxC. It's all good saving money; but we pay money for a reason, and that reason is to get better stuff :p.

If you look on Xnets VFX service under FAQs it does say that WxC will be offering a digital voice and broadband service bundle in December 2007 so as Phil said it is not too far away. Also Phil I am one of your customers that moved from italk to VFX and no comparison between the 2 products. At least with you guys I do get a local number which I didnt have with italk and call quality is better.

Ditto. With so little markup on broadband (sometimes actually costing the ISP money), you definately get what you pay for. If I really want to save money I would go for dial-up, but I would not be happy. (If I wanted to save money, I also would not drive Volvos!)

I have no regrets whatsoever using WxC my anniversary with WxC will be Jan 19th

So I'll wait until then to see the lay of the land esp if WxC are to announce new naked dsl/VoIP packages in Dec, hopefully the landscape changes but I refuse to pay $288 per annum more for the same services if I don't have too

WxC will at some stage have to be competitive in the new unfolding landscape if they want to grow

Re WxC Naked Bitstream products

We underatand that people are keen to see what our naked bitstream product is going to be priced at but we are waiting for the Final Determination of the regulated component pricing before we finalise our own retail pricing.

The Commerce Commission is due to release this Determination in early December and our intention is to have details of retail product bundles available online shortly thereafter.

While we do appreciate your comments Robert , there are actually huge commercial ramifications to this, what you are seeing from companies without a IP / VOIP strategy is a early play to lock in customers, good on them it is there right to market it in any way they see fit to make up for there short comings in this area, but what they are effectively do is setting a false market level for costs and pricing for Telco services, they are also trying to get to a level where they also can actually offer true NGN services so they are trying to lock people in since they won’t be able to compete in the Naked DSL world , nothing wrong with this and the good thing about our industry is that you have choice as a consumer, but the devil lies in the detail, you can go with the same old same old services or you can take advantage of NGN services , choose the best fit for you. Also what you are comparing is a subsidized service(free broadband) others are giving away free line rental so the actual costs are hidden , once again it’s a land grab for customers that may be looking for an alternative they did it early to try and lock in these customers, now make no mistake here these won’t last and I will almost lay money on it won’t carry on so there normal price will add another $30 ,

At this stage we still don’t have any finalized pricing for this product so we can’t offer any pricing until we know so hard to compare apples with apples, what we also have we believe is the most advanced converged VOIP / IP network in New Zealand and are happy to put our Network performance and quality product offerings up against any other for both reliability and quality. We also believe we really do support our customer base better than anyone else and I don’t think these are just idle words, getting voted TUANZ carrier of the year is actually a really big deal in this industry, for a start it’s the first time a Tier II service provider has ever won this, it has always been one of the bigger companies Telecom and Vodafone , now these are major players with huge money behind them so this goes to show it has to be something pretty good to beat out them out for the Top prize, so what I am probably trying to saying without all the chest banging ( don’t normally do this but we are pretty proud over here so good to say it out in public for once) is that we offer a total quality package and it will generally be competitive but weather we will give away free internet as a draw card that will be a question for our Director in sales, there is an adage though “pay peanuts and you get monkeys” or in this case possibly locked into a service that doesn’t perform how you would like with services stuck in the dark age, I don’t think this is the digital strategy the government or New Zealanders want.

Sorry for the long post and I understand your question and why you posted it, but I don’t quite agree with your comments.We don’t offer the same services we offer NGN services, the others don’t pure and simple Robert. As I have already said as soon as the pricing is available to us we will let you know, I see Paul has just posted we expect the ComCom to give us the final determination in December, lets reassess then shell we.
