Hi there,

My dad is going over to Europe for a years vacation (!!), so I was considering buying him a pap2t and subscribing him to a vfx line. I was going to port his current land line number to the vfx connection.

What I'm hoping for, is that he can plug the pap2t into an ethernet port overseas (in a hotel/into my step sisters adsl router etc..) and make/receive calls as if he were in NZ.

Is this possible?

How would vfx sound with ~300ms delay? (assuming its 300ms from the UK to NZ).

Hi Nico,

Various people have already done that with VFX -- including some of the WxC staff. If you search through the old posts, you will find reports from those who have tried it. I remember Maverick saying it worked perfectly well plugged into his travel router at various hotels.

I think Niel was also planning to send a PAP2T over to his parents in South Africa for the same reason, but I'm not sure how far he got with that.

The delay isn't too much of a problem. If you have used SkypeOut to call overseas, it is probably better than that by all accounts. I have used SkypeOut quite a bit, and while you do notice the delay, it's not that much of a problem usually.

Certainly, taking VFX overseas is do-able and provides a very convenient and low-cost way to stay in touch

Sugestion would be for a 2102 as it has a LAN and WAN port whereas the PAP2T only has a wan, if your in hotels you would need that setup

sorry I don't follow...

why would I need that setup with a 2102 for a hotel ?

I think he means:

If you use a PAP2T, it takes up a LAN port in the hotel, of which there is only one.

If you use a 2102, it takes up a LAN port in the hotel, but also provides another on the unit for you to plug your laptop into.

To add to this - some hotels display a webpage before you can actually get internet access.

Your PAP2T won't be able to view them, but a 2102 will, because of the ability to plug a laptop in.
