Has anyone else noticed really bad call quality in good signal areas when on 4g? I have noticed it allot recently since the switch to 4g. Trying to call someone in whangarei from Napier, both with new samsung s6's and it is like a bad Voip call or like talking through a harmonica instrument.

Voice calls don't go over 4G the handset will hand down to 3G and hand back up to 4G when call ends if you are in 4G coverage area

I make many calls a day and have not noticed what you mention

Hey johnr I actually notice this recently as well. It doesn't happen all the time but I did notice it every now and then. I blamed this on my phone speaker at first but then it also happens when you're connected via bluetooth to car speaker.

I have been waiting for someone to comment this first. It seems like I'm not alone then. It seems to happen more around the commuting time - 4 - 7 pm.

Basically what he said, this means that even though you had great 4g coverage when you started it automatically hands down to 3g, the 3g coverage maybe far weaker than the 4g. One thing to try would be to change your settings to only allow 2 and 3g. See how your signal is then.

It could be that you still have 4G reception, but not 3G, so the voice call is falling back to using 2G?

I thought that may have been the case, but this is all over hawkes bay, including central Napier.

One thing I have noticed is that the signal is always good- 2 bars and when it switches down to 3g it often rises as the call starts and drops back down again when the call ends.

Oh well I will continue to put up with it

The signal strength changes cause the handset must be passing down from 4G 1800Mhz to 3G 900Mhz for the voice call

I wonder if you are use to VodafoneNZ to VodafoneNZ mobile calls which are HD voice and when you call a number off-net or a VodafoneNZ customer with a non HD voice capable handset you are noticing the big difference in call quality between the two

Vodafone << >> 2degree's calls are often horrid.
Various transcoding going on with inter carrier calls.

Still, if it's an issue, get a fault logged or maybe get your handset checked out.
