This just in from the Sales Team

Because of TCNZ system constraints, in order to move to naked DSL and port your number.

For the time being, Customers will need to call their current line provider and “custom link” their number to a "dummy" Telecom number which still operate on the existing line.

Then we will do the Fusion activation and request that the number be ported to WxC.  Their other services should drop away and the customer gets to keep their number.

We are working with TCNZ to get the Customer Link fee waived until they can get their systems working transparently but cannot make any guarentees just yet.

The Sales folks will walk you through the necessary steps when you talk to them if this is all too confusing for you.... as it is for me.

Thats fine but there's ABSOLUTLY NO reason for telecom to do this, if Aussie can do this seamlessly then why can't NZ, Oh hang on I just remembered, it's called Telecom trying to rip people off for the last time while porting their number and TRYING to make as much money as they can before the company collapses or gets paralized.
As telecom said them selves, with NDSL that could cause the
collapse of telecom and for Telecom to go out of business with in the next 15 years.

Where do we get the "dummy" telecom number?

I thought about linking to my vfx number from my ihug home line and then cancelling it when ndsl is active?

Yes, that's what I did.  It's a much simpler way to go about it, and then you won't lose any calls during the changeover, so long as you have "Call Forward Unreachable" set up Cool

So I ring up ihug and tell them I want to set up a "line link" as they call it to my vfx number.

I then call xnet (again) and ask for ndsl to be provisioned and my old ihug number ported.

It that it?

I noticed on the ihug site it only mentions line link being available for users with a business line and there is no option in the home phone settings for residential users to choose it. Hopefully it is available if you call and talk to someone.

But I do have an idea about it, I work for an Aussie ISP, actually the first Australian ISP to launch NDSL nearly two months ago, so yeah I know quite alot about NDSL :)

Yeah, that sounds like the plan Marmel Smile

If by any chance iHUG won't play ball with you by setting up "Line Link" as they call it, then I suggest taking your phone line back to Telecom who will get you re-connected in double-quick time.  Then do the Customer Link thing, which also happens very quickly, and finally arrange for Xnet to provision your line with NDSL.  A bit more of a roundabout route, but you will definitely get there in the end.

What happens if I try to port a number away from telecom (when it's the only number connected at that address)?
Reading through woosh's faq a few months ago they made a big deal about it only collapsing the pots and any adsl would have to be disconnected seperately (or that's the way I read it).  Would that leave a line which is a great deal more difficult to identify, or would it mean adsl service would also be disconnected?

It will collapse ALL services associated with that line.

I suggest you read through the Xnet Fusion thread and follow the recommended procedure which involves Customer Linking your number first. Then you can avoid this problem.

is it likely to work (and avoid the disconnection for the changeover to the dummy number) if a dual number is set up, the original number ported away and the request for ndsl is made after the port has occured?

Dual Number is a service on the original line #, and as such the original line will be disconnected (if we are talking about the same thing here). Remember, the number is transferred to your new provider, NOT the existing services.

Just wondering,

For this, we customerlink the current number?
Then we tell telecom to connect a new number to the existing phoneline for $50 i think it is? + one months rental($36)?
Then once Xnet fusion gets turned on, we ring Telecom to cancel the old number, Xnet ports the new number for $20 isn't it? hopefully waives the other fee ;) then they tell Telecom to completely cancel the POTs service? and it's all good from there :)

You've got it pretty much right except for this bit:
vinnieg: Then we tell telecom to connect a new number to the existing phoneline for $50 i think it is? + one months rental($36)?

Connecting a new number to the existing line is a Number Swap and when I went through this process there was no charge for it, so long as I had a valid reason for wanting the number swap.  Porting of your current number is a valid reason AFAIK, so there should be no $50 charge.

As for the $36 for one month's line rental, I'm not sure where you get that figure from because it's usually more like $45.  Anyway, you will pay just the portion of the month until NDSL is provisioned (when your landline will be disconnected) and Telecom will credit you for the unused portion of the month.  They're good like that Smile

yeah I'm having a bit of a fight with telecom at the moment, because i got my number customerlinked before asking for a number swap

I keep getting the same person :( and she doesn't have a clue about naked DSL, number porting or anything, I might ring back and ask for a different division, maybe customer linking department again.

Oh, $36 is what i usually pay - wiring and maintenance charge, I had that removed from my phoneline since I know where the line enters and have only two ports in the house now :)

Well, got the number through the telecom customerlink dept :) great people, first lady wasn't telling me the right info in the new connection dept :(

All connected up with the spare number now, so my net should work again till it churns over to fusion

Can't wait :)
But had to pay $50 because I didn't do the number swap at the same time as my CustomerLinking and it's been just over 8 days since that :S all good otherwise though :)
