I just received an odd text on my phone
Its from "798" and it says "+[removed] wants u to call them."
I'm thinking this is dodgy. If they want to talk to me and have my number why not just ring?
Has anyone else received a weird text like this?

Yeah, they want you to call. So you'll be fleeced at some premium rate call charge.

The wording of kiwifidget's message doesn't match the Vodafone article. It could be some sort of scam, seemingly coming from 798 to make it appear more legitimate (just a guess, but a possibility).
I can't think of any situation where I would respond to a message like this.
Friends and family would send a real text. Potential clients tend to call and leave voicemail messages or email.
I wont call the number but also just wanted to give a heads up about it.
Is Vodafone able to put measures in place to prevent their network being used in this way, once they know about it?

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.
hairy1: In my experience I generally receive the vodafone call back messages from trade me buyers after I have sold something. Sold anything on trade me lately?
They generally don't have enough prepay credit to ring...
Not sold, but I did buy something yesterday, and that is not the sellers number.

I would ignore it; even if I had sold or bought something on trademe, they can email me if they want me to ring them.

Well I certainly don't know that person. I must be a wrong number.

Maybe the 021 number is Prepay and has no credit / minutes
Is that the actual wording VF uses. "U" instead of "you" and nothing to indicate whether the text is legit or not?
