Interesting that in terms of their scoring, there's not a lot of difference in the total (~3%) between "Operator 2" and "Operator 3".

Spark has really gone to the dogs recently I have found. I have a sim I keep active in my tablet for the $19 pack to get my spotify and occasionally pull the tablet out to use when I am in a no vodafone signal area, which is actually pretty rare now, or swap with the one in my phone when I am out of data.

Its usually quite slow to load web stuff even tho the speeds seem fine. Often have the images in the twitter app take forever to load as scrolling and other just not pleasent to use things. Vodafone have the best network, best app for checking all the sim cards have money on them and reasonably good customer service when needed. With the decent casual data rate now I really should cancel the spark music pack and just pay spotify directly to save a little.

I heard that when Tobacco companies pay for a research company to do research on the effects of tobacco, it always seems to deliver results favourable to the tobacco company that paid the money.

Not sure if that is relevant to this, but thought I would share.

I'd guess that if "Operators 2 and 3" don't complain - then the P3 findings must be considered valid? Companies like this always seem to like protesting about statements by their opposition.

Not in the case of download speed - which is significantly more than 3% against one operator

So perhaps they only will ask the research to be done if they're confident of what the results will be. Or they make sure the report is kept quiet if they come out 2nd best.

I'm not sure if any conspiracy theories about P3 research hold any real weight. They do testing in a lot of different countries and don't always show Vodafone being the best. Yes Vodafone paid fort his, but if they weren't the best I'm sure you just wouldn't have heard about it!

Of course everybody doing testing is going to have different methodology and pull the methodology used by others apart..

You're probably right about your theories about coming second Steve, but I'm pretty sure VF didn't have any control over how P3 tested.

I'm guessing P3 have a standard suite of tests they apply globally depending on the technology present in that country (specifically operator bands etc).

Also thinking it makes sure VF are legally covered when they advertise this information in the public domain.

P3 are an independant company - paying lipservice to any one operator would do nothing for their reputation in the business :)

Do all operators get notified of when P3 will be doing their testing so that there is equal opportunity for operators to apply change freezes, capacity upgrades etc?

I would guess not, as they could (possibly) also "hype up" the network to make it perform better than usual?

I've literally driven all over the South Island including visiting Stewart Island - my trips involved months of living on the road and at hotels. Take it from me, I can confirm that between the 2.5 networks Spark is far superior in the South Island coverage wise and this was 2 years ago. Unless Vodafone have vastly improved coverage (they have slightly, but at a very slow pace) in my own personal opinion this report is utter BS.

I had 3 mobile devices with me (technically 4 if you count the cars GPS tracker on Vodafone GPRS) - A phone (Spark), a tablet (2degrees) and another phone on Vodafone (same phone). I can confirm that there were many times Spark had very good HSDPA or 4G data whilst Vodafone had either GPRS or no coverage and there was really not a vice versa.

The route they took also has reasonably good coverage on all 2.5 networks. If they went to Christchurch via the Lewis Pass this will be a completely different example where Spark would utterly own Vodafone with HSDPA or LTE/700 coverage. The fact they don't list the other 2 networks (clearly a bias test) shows this is simply another paid endorsement by Vodafone.

I am getting sick of these "awards". They don't mean anything and yet, you'll still see Vodafone plaster it all over their advertisements.
