Is there a way to find the out ahead of time if your area (Rural) can run a Vodem on 3G?

Visit there with a 3G handset and check for 3G coverage?

Hi jberries,

Vodafone has a checking tool, whereby you enter your address and its checks the levels of coverage at your location.

The URL is:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/help/coverage/

I'm watching mine, as I too live in a rural area, and already use Vodem on 2.6G because our landlines here are sooo crappy! I'm eagerly looking forward to the advent of 3G on our local cell tower, later this year.

Cheers,

George

Wow thanks guys for the fast response.  I get this which I guess is not 3G.

2G/2.5G coverage in your area
This location has a very strong signal, so you will definitely experience excellent quality for all services. Your mobile data connection will be as fast as a dial-up connection.

If you're in a coverage area that doesn't have 2100MHz 3G coverage already there is a very good chance that you'll have 900MHz 3G coverage when Vodafone's new network goes fully live. There are already sites live and people using the network.

This is going to mean buying a new device however as the Vodem isn't compatible with the 900MHz 3G network.

2.5G is GPRS. You would be lucky to get decent service with GPRS. It's most of the times slower than dial-up and almost impossible to use for anything but e-mail.

In my experiences a while ago, I found the Voda maps for 3G were pretty inaccurate, as in there was actually far more 3G coverage than what the maps were showing.

I guess I will have to beg or borrow a vodem to test it out.
