I assume one of the Telcos over there may allow you to send web texts?

Im sure google will yield fruitful results if you type in "Web to text USA"

But that's not from the NZ mobile as the OP wants.

I think I can do it through one of the sms free services.....but.....when the recipient responds to the text how do I receive the notification.....or is that a dumb question? Anybody recommend one service over another?

Simple answer

Nope

Maybe whatsapp or alike has an option to send texts from that country?

Edit:

Skype.. I remember you used to be able to back in the day. Maybe still?

Easily done if you both have iMessage. Just set up an iMessage account with an email address and send it to their number from that address.

See if you can find a roaming US sim card. When I last looked for one to establish a US number I could use it was not as easy as australia and the UK to have a prepay sim card that you roamed with, they had all sorts of complicated plans and packages and stuff.

Try Google voice - never set it up but it does give you a US phone number and it looks like it handles Texts

If you wanted to use your device, get TextNow,

US Apple Store

Android Store

for iOS obviously you need US apple store ID

for Android, hunt for apk, easy enough.

Register number on phone, and that's it. You get free calling USA and Canada with it.. full of adverts though, so watch for that.

Or I can give you one of my google voice numbers ... PM me...

Why do you need to prevent them knowing you're a Kiwi in the first place?

Probably because people in the US are very xenophobic when it comes to buying and selling.
