Hi,

I have an 1999 Volvo S80, and it has a built in phone.  It takes a full sized sim card (like before you break it out of the card).

I purchased a prepay sim from Vodafone to use in it, but it doesn't recognise the card.  Apparently, doing some investigation indicates the car can only accept Sim 1, not Sim 2 cards.  This has been told to me by a Volvo dealer and Vodafone are also aware of it.

So, I've had a look on Trademe to find a Sim 1.  How do I know if it is Sim 1 - are all 32k cards Sim 1?

Anything else I should keep an eye out for.

My concern is that this sim card on Trademe says 32k, but also has Sim 2 written on it?! http://www.trademe.co.nz/Mobile-phones/Accessories/Other/auction-154252633.htm

Cheers,
Danny

Can the Vodafone store not help you?

I seriously doubt you will find an old SIM on Trademe but my understanding was Vodafone do still have these and will supply them on request. Most people move the other way from the old SIM to a new one as many newer handsets won't work with the old SIM but VF do have them for handsets and devices such as data modems that require the old SIM's.

The store may not have them but should be able to source one for you.

Thanks!

OK, I'll give them a call and find out... (edit): by the way, I purchase this from VFs website...

But, I guess the question still stands - is the SIM on Trademe, which is a 32k SIM - Sim1 or Sim2?

Is there a way to tell?

Its very clearly printed with SIM2 on it, so I am a little unsure of the answer you are looking for.

Would you really believe anyone who said "ignore the SIM2 bit, its a SIM1" ?

Yeah, OK - I guess you have a fair point there!

But still, does anyone know how to determine if a SIM card is SIM1 or SIM2?  To be honest, before trying to put the card into the Volvo, I didn't even realise there were different standards!

Is there a simple rule of thumb - SIM1 less than or equal to 32k or something? (but I guess that isn't correct as the trademe card is 32k)

I've called Vodafone, and they have been pretty unhelpfull - pretty much "have a look on Trademe - good luck!".  Maybe I didn't get the right customer services person!?

The issue is not sim1 or sim2 its voltage. Check with volvo if they have new firmware for the carphone. That is the best place to start customer service will not be able to provide you with the sim you require.

Simple rule of thumb: Vodafone NZ SIM2 cards have SIM2 printed on them. Vodafone NZ SIM1 cards do not have SIM2 printed on them.

I have never seen any deviation from this, but there may be exceptions I am not aware of.

I can imagine trying to get new firmware installed on the phone will not be a simple job!  They didn't suggest this at the dealer.

As for the Sim2 being printed on the card.  The card that I've just purchased from Vodafone online has 128k printed on the chip side and has:

Vodafone
Prepay
Helpline 777
or 0800 800021

STKv2.4.0
070807
397863

Printed on the other side.  No mention of Sim2!  Maybe the "STKv2" refers to Sim2?

Any sim from 2003ish onwards is considered a sim2. You can tell the age of a sim by the numbers. If they start with 6401 ignore that the next 4 digits are the year and month of manufacture. You need to talk to volvo and say why does this sim work in every other device apart from my carphone. Its not fault of the sim.

That's V2.4 of the SIM Toolkit menu on the SIM (Vodafone Menu)
