Hi Guys,

Mate here at work has just brought a 40" Bravia D series and he has TC Cable at home - anyone like to comment on how good bad the picture quality is.

PS this isnt a person like myself who tweaks the hell out of everything to get the best picture possible. Basically he used to have a 25" 15 year old CRT.

Cheers.

The first thing to do is make sure you've got a STB that has the S-Video output and use that instead of composite. If the box doesn't have one then ring up TCL and say you want it swapped out.

Thanks man, we were discussing whether it had anything better the composite so this is good to know. I guess with S-Video its about the same as Sky via s-video then.

Man I love freeview HD :-)

S-Video is the best you can get from the TCL supplied STB's, otherwise you could go for a Dreambox, which does have Component out via SCART, however you will only notice the difference on TV1/2/3 which are good enough quality to notice the difference between S-Video and Component and are the same quality as what you get off Freeview Satellite (but with Wellington Add's not Auckland ones :), most of the other channels are a digital rebroadcasts of what TCL get from Sky off the Satellite, some are still analogue, but that is only a few (like Playhouse Disney :(..).  So hence S-Video is probably good enough.

If TCL were really smart (not that Sky would EVER go for this) they would source their feeds directly from Sky in Auckland and pump it down their fibre to Wellington/Chch.  That way TCL could offer vastly superior picture quality than Sky could offer due to TCL having so much capacity on their cable network and Satellite transponder space being so expensive for Sky... Ahh dreams are free.

I dont have TCL digital cable TV, we have Sky, but I was called to a clients home yesterday to sort out an issue with his TCL digital STB and his philips DVR, once I sorted that out I set about puting a S-Vid cable in for him, there was an improvement, his TV was a 32" pixel plus CRT, the pixel plus processor was making a job of the mix of both low bitrates and composite feed, so S-Vid helped, changing to normal 100Hz rather than pixel plus was probably a more significant improvement.

But other than TV1/2/3 which as Bartender indicated are pulled of FreeView without recode most other channels (UKTV looked ok) were shocking and well below what I see on Sky digital, I personally would not pay a cent for a substandard service like TCL offer, YMMV.

Again, I do notice a difference in PQ between the TCL suppled STB and my DM. Next time I am up the coast we should get a long piece of (Quad Shielded naturally ;) RG6 at your place Cyril and have a bake off, I bet our collective wifes would love that ;)

Sounds good, as you know I dont have TCL on the property, but some bugga left a green box with a tap on my front lawn, so can quickly rustle up a feed :)

I had a new STB installed and asked about getting the best possible PQ out of my LCD,  the Tech mentioned that there is no point in using S-Video as you will not notice a difference in PQ...??

You will notice a difference, mainly dot-crawl will go away.  Mostly noticeable on stb graphics and certain video colours (a nice thing of composite).  Was this a Downer/Astute tech that said that?
