Hi Guys,

hope you can help....I often watch live soccer from back home, usually at around 3am in the morning (like now).

This website has around 100 members watching each week.

I seem to be pretty much the only one who gets crap streams nowadays

There server is located in the UK....is there anyway to check if voda can do anything?

the steam is only sent out at 259kbs, which should coz no problems for my connection (FS/128).

Anyone ANY ideas, as its doing my head in!

If you do a traceroute to the streaming server from your box - can you see any packet loss anywhere on the path?
Does that server have any non-stream content that you could download, if so - at what speed does it go?
Do you have any problems streaming from anywhere else (for example youtube?)
What sort of speeds you get on www.speedtest.net?

Since you're trying to stream it at 3am one can pretty much rule out network congestion. The only thing that comes to my mind is problem somewhere on the far end - like the traffic back to NZ not being routed through a pipe big enough.

Hi,

I done 2 speedtests at half time of the soccer last night:

getting 3481kbs to London and 2506kbs to Dublin

you tube etc is fine, and I watched an interview just before the game from the same server.....that was receiving at 1900kbs.

I just googled how to do a traceroute....I didnt know, so hopefully the software i used helpd, i dont really understand it tho!

hmm,

First trace looks ok to me, it doesn't show packet loss, but I'm not sure if that one shows it at all ;-)
you can try pathping command from your windows prompt (start -> run -> type cmd (enter) and then pathping hostname)).

What makes me wonder is the fact that your own gateway seems to be appearing there a lot of times (in the second trace). I'm not sure if that should be a big concern, parhaps thats just normal for that type of cpe/gateway. Anyone?

The fact that you can download from UK/Irland over 2Mb/s suggest that this is most likely a far-end problem (source of the stream).

I will try pathping when I get back home.

I wasnt sure how to run a trace from using the cmd command.

I tried tracert www.hiberniantv.co.uk

it ran the 1st 3 or 4 hops, then told me something about 'unavailable' but it done the exact same for bbc.co.uk and trademe.co.nz....so I dont think I was doing it right??

Seeing as a UK server is about as far away as we can get, performance on downloading stuff from there is variable.....but most of the time way over the required 259kbs.....it just seems to be the LIVE streaming that throws a wobbly!

The thing about it being a 'far end' problem is weird, as with around 100 people watching, from all over outside the UK.....I seem to be the only one who consistently gets poor streams.

Few people in OZ etc are 95% fine with there stream??

Its v annoying, as I pay 125 GBP for this service, so if theres anything i can do to fix it, I obvioulsy wanna find out! :)

Also, some weeks I will get a perfect stream, and then the next week, I see none of the match! :(

Some devices in the path will not answer your icmp (or udp) requests, that's normal. Sometimes even the last hop is firewalled off, which makes it quite difficult to assess if it's working ok or not. Just wait for the traceroute/pathping to finish (traceroute show * when it doesn't get a reply)

Hi,

Yep, i'll try pathping once I get home and post what it says.

Strange thing was tring traceroute last night thro cmd was that it did run, only showed 3 hops, followed by an error message (forget what it said now), then on next line trace finished.

I will try trace again when I get back too, and post the results of that as well (even if this error shows again).

I'm on VF broadband too and just checked the test transmission on that site. I let it run for about 10minutes - no issues or glitches.
Do you use wireless or wired connection at home?

Hi,

Its a wired connection, ethernet from modem to desktop.

so the connection should be more stable than wireless right?

as I said, seems focused on when the live streaming is happening.....most other times the pre recorded interviews etc stream OK.

I think I ran out of ideas. The only thing that comes to my mind are potential issues with the stream that get exposed by signficant latency that you experience streaming from UK. I'm guessing that for users closer to the server it's not an issue since the delay is not that big and potential issues can be masked easily.

Cheers mate....so my traceroute & packet loss all looked normal?

Its strange though, as alot of people in oz etc report hardly any issues.....weras I now seem to have bad streams the majority of the time.

The used to use a US based server, and swithced to UK one about 6 months ago....since then ive had trouble.

I wonder if moving to the red network will help (I get migrated on Friday)......

Your traces look perfectly normal. I'm not sure if the migration onto the red network will help. It will most likely slightly reduce your ping times and might increase the up/down speeds (if you're close enough to the exchange), which might have positive impact. But generally speaking - I wouldn't expect miracles.

just put a message on there board asking about if I ran a traceroute would it be to hiberniantv.co.uk
