Hello all,

Long time lurker of this forum. I'm having serious considerations of buying an iPhone this weekend, via Vodafone online or in their retail shop. Now, I've seen mention of the Commerce Commission have blocked the ability to "lock" the iPhones thus allowing anyone who buys them here to get them to work on all sim cards. Now, is it a breach of agreement if Vodafone locks out prepaid users?

I doubt it. Companies are not required to sell to you. If they do they have to sell what's advertised. So I don't see any problems in Vodafone not offering the Apple iPhone on Prepay.

out of the 5 million threads on geekzone about the iphone 3g you could not find where its been mentioned about 2 million times the iphone 3g is not sim locked. Why bring up the comcom like that. (please not figures quoted may be incorrect)

Maybe he's referring to the data aspect of prepay on the iPhone?

The commerce commission didn't order Vodafone not to lock their phones, they just strongly urged them. I highly doubt they would bat an eye regarding locking ONLY the DATA on ONLY the IPHONE 3G and ONLY on PREPAY.

I'm sorry! I didn't mean to offend people by not searching these forums before posting! I did a search using the Search function above, I don't get totally relevant results when I search "iPhone 3G prepaid".

I was only meaning to ask.. Because I'm aware of Vodafone NZ's iPhones are unlocked, yes I know that, I know you can only get them on contract (for the time being) but people have purchased their iPhones and used their prepaid sim card just fine, even got their 3G data working (despite being very expensive). Essentially, I'm just asking whether if I bought the phone tomorrow, will it work?

You can purchase an iPhone at full price. Insert your prepay SIM card and you will have voice and SMS. There's nothing Vodafone does preventing you using those services.

For mobile data you will need to visit www.unlockit.co.nz from your phone over WiFi and change the APN to any of the other Vodafone APNs.

Note that you will be using casual data on prepay, which is much more expensive than a plan.

I've got Wifi almost everywhere I go, no need for 3G.

Until Monday when the $1 a day prepay kicks in ($1 for 10MB of data)...which mean you could over a month download 300MB of data for only $30, better than casual data! With these plans it make the iPhone 3G on prepay viable.

The new Casual Rate Data Plans, effective as of tomorrow on Vodafone, at $1 for 10MB are quite reasonable I think, considering you would only be using it for lite browsing/email, after all, the landline can be used for large file downloads.
