The following site (warning it is virused) https://www DOT mobilebooster DOT co DOT nz is claiming to sell Mobile Phone / Cellular boosters for folks who have bad cell signals.

The product they are purporting to sell is quality poduct but that's where the good news stops.

Their product is logoed with Vodafone, Spark and 2Degrees logos. They are claiming to represent items authorised for use by those companies. However I doubt thats the case.

I first got suspicious when I clicked on an install instructions link and got a Go Daddy - you can buy this site message. THeir DNS works for http://www.mob.... but not http://mob.... No *. A Record.

Their contact us form caused Eset to throw a hissy fit as it has Kryptic / Js all through it.

Their phone number gets a Hindi speaking insurance company

THeir 24 / 7 chat doesn't work.

Their links also go to mob...co.uk and mob...com and those are equally non useful.

Does anyone have any experience of these folks and does anyone know a truely legit place in NZ selling boosters. Vodafone are out of Home and Enterprise boosters they can sell directly.

Anyone from Vodafone know if these folks really sell authorized gear? Do they actually sell gear or is it a scam. THey are paypal registered - but not verified.

Vodafone / Spark / 2Degrees - you may want to investigate their use of your branding / logos.

A number of threads already on geekzone about these folks and warnings not to deal with them!

If you power up one of these units in New Zealand you are breaking the law

while it is true VF dont supply that exact make / model they do supply Sure Signal Devices in the $199 and $1000 range. The $1000 is gone - EOL. The others will be back again Mid July. In the mean time my client will either have to fork out over $1700 to the single source provider of the authorized 3rd party devices or will remain stiff out of luck. Telecom boosters are available. For a business this is becoming a no brainier - and not in VF's favour. :(

I 100% agree personally...

i would personally go as far as to say the sites should be blacklisted because of the issues they cause. but we all know what sort of rabbit hole that turns to.

These devices cannot be compared to the Vodafone SureSignal in quality, specifications and functionality. SureSignal use your broadband and acts as a picocell. These things are completely different stuff.

Confusing those products with SureSignal is one way it perpetuates the market for illegal transmitters.

@nunz As others have pointed out femtocell works very different to an RF Amp!

Femtocell requires zero coverage to work as it uses the broadband connection for a connection back in the mobile network to provide mobile coverage

True. If it was my business I'd be looking for someone who understood the difference between a femtocell and an illegal RF device. It's a no brainer.

True. If it was my business I'd be looking for someone who understood the difference between a femtocell and an illegal RF device. It's a no brainer.

Not only is your comment rude it is fatally flawed in a number of ways.

1. It assumes every IT person should know everything about everything
2. It assumes a person conversant with femtocell tech is able to provide all other services required
3. It assumes I'm incompetent despite you having no idea who i am or what i can do

It is a statement based on ignorance and flawed logic.

Mauritio had the grace to explain the difference thus educating me on mobile boost process in VF. You were just rude.

And VF do use boost devices. They are called RBI connections using exactly the same aerials and similar tech to the illegal boosters but only work for data. Thus the confusion.

Cel Fi also sell boost devices that seem to be legal as you go through VF to authorise the device. Its a very confusing area to be looking into and as VF have no boosters ... one that is going to bite a lot more people.

An rbi connection uses a yagi antennae(same as boosters) run to a router which then retransmits for connection using rj45 based physical or 2.4 / 5 8 wireless. It then listens on that frequency and retransmits to the tower on one of several frequencies

A mobile booster uses a yagi antennae (normally) run to a device which retransmits on a frequency. It also listens on that frequency and retransmits to tower on one of several frequencies.

The only difference in many cases is the transmission and retransmission freqs used.

Some equipment varies from this description. Some doesnt.

The rbi has to amplify the signal to get it back to the tower which is why in many setups we use 12- 15db yagi and not omni pole antennae or other devices. Internet connections are two way like phone signal. I dont care if its rf amp or black magic. In the end antennae to box retransmits to phone ..recollects and retransmits making the signal strong enough to be heard both ways. Similar paradigm talking to similar equipment.
