Hi guys, finally got the wireless broadband seniors plan up and running for my elderly mum, I didn’t realise that for her to make a phone call she has to enter area code first before dialing the number, she is really struggling with this concept. I have suggested just using the phone book but she gets confused. Is there any setting in the modem I can change so she doesn’t have to enter in area code to make a phone call?. I am thinking might have just change back to a normal wired plan and pay a bit more.

That's extremely poor for Vodafone to not support local dialing. Like really bad.

I would suggest moving it to a Spark fixed wireless connection. At least they offer a decent replacement for PSTN.

Spark you can just dial a local number without area code first?. I really might have to look at that option she's really struggling to remember to type in 04 before every number .

My 90 year old Grandma has spark fixed wireless and am certain I would of heard about it if she couldnt dial local numbers.

I'm sure @Hio77 could confirm?

Only the laziest configurations wouldn't allow dialing local numbers. Incredible it doesnt work on VF.

Only the laziest configurations wouldn't allow dialing local numbers. Incredible it doesnt work on VF.


We had problems setting it up took two weeks to work out that the phones they provided with the phone the Panasonics had an area code setting set as default so she could only ring an 0800 or a cell phone. Got that fixed but now of course have to use area code first to call out. If spark isnt like that would be interested to move she only needs 20gb max per month to look at the odd website but landline is a must have. Thank you

It's easy for Spark but not easily done on VF.

 

VF landline uses 3G circuit switched for the voice calls which is the same as the mobile network. Changing things to remove the area code is quite complex.

 

Spark use VoIP over a dedicated APN and because they know the area code you're in it is no different to any other VoIP call on a fixed line connection.

I am sure even in the 025 / AMPS days you did not need to dial with an area code

I don't know anything about the technical aspects of this but our ISP is Netspeed and they use a Vodafone mast for our wireless RBI. We have had issues with our speed falling below acceptable levels, but the bundled phone has always worked flawlessly and it works exactly like our landline did. We never have to use an area code for local calls. The adaptor for the phone is a Cisco device that plugs into the LAN port of the router. That is all I can say about it but it works exactly like our landline did, except we have two lines instead of one.

You have a VoIP service. This is not what Vodafone supply (which for most people is this)

Calls over a 3G network are not VoIP between handset and serving cell this is a circuit switch call
