Hi,

As of Sunday 21st July 2019 around 5:00am I got an email that my Synology NAS lost its connection. Upon trying to reach "www.synology.com", I noticed that I could not get into the website at all. However on mobile network 4G, I could get into the website without any problems. Is there any problems with Vodafone DNS servers?

I use these DNS addresses as shown here (http://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/27167/~/vodafone-dns-settings-and-flushing-your-cache):

  • Primary DNS:  203.109.191.1
  • Secondary DNS:  203.118.191.1

There are some form of hiccups when I browse the net (like web loading slow at times) but synology.com is the only website that I cannot get in, and always get the 'Server not found' message. Prior to this I don't have any problems at all. This is so weird.

Looks like it's not resolving from the Wellington DNS. Everything else is fine, so I'm guessing there's been some change upstream which caused a "not found" response to be cached in our Wellington DNS. I expect it'll clear within 24hours, and you'll find things working again. In the meantime you could use an external DNS (eg 1.1.1.1) if you like.

Thanks for the reply. Good to know the problem is not on my end, I'll check it again tomorrow.

Thanks for this. Just spend a few hours tonight trying to workout why I could not get synology.com using the vodafone DNS addresses ( im my asus router). When I use my VPN ( which uses its own DNS addresses) I can access the synology site through my browser.

Strangely i can't update my DSM ( on my DS918+) from the DSM application even though I am connected through a VPN.

Hope this is resolved as none of the applications running under DSM can get out to update anything.

Some websites also have problems connecting like (Netgear, Mightyape) which responses back with server not found. After waiting a couple of minutes, they are able to load back....hopefully Vodafone DNS get fixed soon.

Having an identical issue with those same ihug DNS servers refusing to resolve arstechnica.com all weekend. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

Needless to say but saying

Test with Cloudflare DNS (IPv4: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 and if you use IPv6: 2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). If it works you know for sure it's a Vodafone DNS issue.

Call Vodafone help desk and log a fault. If you only post here their service won't be aware of this happening. Make sure you get a ticket number - they are known for not creating a fault record and leaving people behind, so ask for a ticket number to make sure it happened.

Vodafone help desk will ask you to restart router, restart computer, use their DNS, etc. Yes, it will be annoying but they will follow a script because they will try to make sure it's a problem on your side (this will happen if one person calls or a hundred people call).

And keep using the Cloudflare or Google DNS until it's fixed - you can test using the DNS Lookup as per post above against the Vodafone DNS.

Until they make their call centre a reverse 0900 number that pays me $2/minute that's not going to happen. And yes I know I should leave, but they keep buying me back with ridiculously cheap deals and credits for the stuffups.

Thanks freitism. I will try the Google and Cloudfare DNS.

Of course I have done all the restart of system components, different browsers, checked DNS is Vodafone, cleared caches etc. I also am not prepared to waste my limited lifetime left ( I am in late 60s) hanging on and going through Vodafone call center scripts to do things I have already done. I will leave it for a younger person :-)

At a pinch I can download DSM updates manually using when using VPN.

Cheers

Should be fixed now, but yell out if you still see problems (don't forget to clear DNS cache on PC and router first)
