Not sure how long it's been there but I just noticed the 3G icon on my phone, just 2 bars worth but it's working well so far. Previously I had zero 3G coverage here in Rolleston, I'm hoping it's not a freak occurrence... Is Vodafone doing some work on this in the area?

Mine is an old Sony Ericsson v600i, I've also had confirmations from people with imate SP-JAS and Nokia 6288.

Hmmm so it is the original 2100MHz 3G they are pushing out your way then (rather than the new 900MHz 3G which would require a different handset), good news!!

As an aside, with a 900-capable 3G device, is there any way of telling if you are getting 900 or 2100 3G ?

If you use a program like Celltrack you shoould be able to work this out (assuming this does run on a 6121). This won't tell you the specific frequency just the cellid ranges which are different on the 900 sites compared to the 2100 sites.

Celltrack should work but you have to go through the process of "signing" it first I believe.

No other way to tell unless you have a non-900MHz 3G phone you can hold beside it :-)

I wasn't aware that Vodafone had granted public access to their new 900 network yet? They usually do a friendly user trail and get a small group of people to test it for a month. Then the marketing guys usually do the big push.

If you have 3G signal then certainly will be using the 2100MHz network.

The Rolleston GSM site is fairly new I think, its across the railway line behind some trees, its about 4-5 years old.

I'd assume its part of their upgrade program, and that because the town has grown over the last 5 years they can justify the expense of providing suitable 3G coverage. See...... Rolleston is the town of the future............
