Hi there,

I'm looking to upgrade my Vodafone cable broadband to their Ultrafast HFC offering but as part of that change they are going to send me their Ultrahub. What actually is this device? Is it a combined modem, router and AP.

With my current setup I have the Vodafone supplied Cisco modem going into my Ubiquiti router which has a single Ubiquiti AP wired into it. With this Ultrahub running will I have a second SSID running side-by with my existing one?

It will just be an AP when used on the HFC network

Hi, the Ultra hub is made by Technicolor, and yes it does have wireless capability, however I recommend you turn that feature off, its very straigt forward to do.

The UltraFast HFC offering will replace your Cisco modem with a Technicolor TC4400 HFC modem that supports DOCSIS3.1 that the Ultra service uses.

The Technicolor UltraHub is also supplied as a router, this also contains wireless.

Which model Unifi router do you have, some may struggle to achieve full GigE WAN speeds if hardware offload is not enabled. If you do resort to using the Ultra hub (personally I would avoid) then you can turn the wireless component off.

Be aware that the Ultra HFC service like the UFB will have traffic from the modem tagged on vlan10 and will be DHCP.

Thank you very much for your response.

So does that mean I will receive two devices, a new modem and the Ultrahub? If so can I just ask them not send the Ultrahub and instead I can just plug the modem straight into my Ubiquiti device?

My router is the EdgeRouter X https://www.ui.com/edgemax/edgerouter-x/ and the AP is the Unifi AP AC LR https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-lr/ which I think will handle Gigabit however I will probably be going with the 200 Mbps plan as opposed to the 900 (Max) Mbps plan.

Hi yep if it were me, I would tell them to keep their router (and not charge or bind you to contract or whatever conditions they supply it under) and stay with what you have. Dont be surprised if any level of protestation you end up with an UltraHub, if you use it or not its up to you, but you will not get any support from them if your Edgerouter has issues with the connection, but plenty of folk here to help, and you wont need to wait in the Voda far que.

Edit: and no you dont need their router and yours, just yours, but remember you need to use DHCP to get an address and that will be on vlan10, check out the turorial that Michael Murfy provided to achieve this, I will post the link here in a moment.
