Why are we paying for national data use as it does not cost XNet much. Shouldn't XNet be pushing stuff like P4P over P2P and offering incentives and stuff so that theyre international bandwidth is in less demmand?

I dont understand why they dont have free national downloads as well as pushing a p4p client?

Because when they used to offer free national the privilege was abused

There were a group of people who used it to ilegally distribute copyrighted material. This plus the enormous bandwidth requirements caused them to stop the offering.

So don't blame Xnet - or any ISP. Blame the idiots.

Ahh yes the good old days of NZ only DC hubs and Bittorrent trackers ;)

Unfortunately I was still using dial-up when free national usage was common

I would say the whole of the "Average users" would of pulled around 500gb of Nat data a month which wouldn’t cost much, but When you get a few users downloading 80+ gb each the prices start mounting, also as freitasm pointed out most of the "group" that abused it were using this service to illegally share copyrighted files

Lol but whats wrong with downloading in excess of 100GB a month! Have you not seen some of the new 250GB caps in america.100GB isn't that much and it is local.I dont see how any ammount of local data use could affect xnet. They have shaping for that type of stuff you know and prioritising so that it wouldnt adversilly affect the network. They dont have to worry about nationall speed but they have to buy international bandwidth which is no where near as cheap so thats why we have to pay for bandwidth.

And im not blameing anyone im just saying that im missing something here, sumthing I don't understaned.

And if they did it to stop copyrighted documents which they didnt.

Then why didnt they genuinly help out by informing the apropriate people of the users who where pirating stuff. Sorry but i dont see this as there crusade against pirating and now people pirate stuff still but they download from people overseas. And then why dont they tell people now about the piraters so that someone can try to do something.lol and it doesnt really affect them whether people where donloading 80+gbavrg back then in pirated contnent or if it was in genuine legall content, so whats the difrence?

Nothing wrong with 100GB. I use more than 160GB a month here - mostly on-line backups. But when you have a group of people consistently using the free data allowance to download gigabytes of illegal material...

I just downloaded Ubuntu and SUSE from ftp.citylink.co.nz.. average speed about 1.4MB/s :)

Would be cool if that didn't count toward the 15GB monthly cap

Limit the "free" national traffic in the same way which Xnet does torrent traffic (but without the increased after-cap costs).

So are you saying that its wrong that people where pirating stuff for free on free data. But you didnt say its wrong that they do it now even when they pay. So are you saying its ok that they pirate stuff if they pay but not if its free? Nor did they stop. So in the end it only decreased the ammount that they would pirate. And if it was about that then they would say that they will be blocking all p2p traffic in an attempt to reduce pirating for the greater good.

Well i dont like that but it sounds reasonable. Sounds fair enough that they would offer some free data allowance for national cap without increased costs. 50-100gb free national would be nice :D lol. But what i was really thinking about in this thread was why hasen't xnet done more to reduce international data bandwidth through encouraging people to use national through incentives.

No, Xnet have said many times that they could install deep packet inspection servers which could give torrents lower priority than other traffic (increasing the experience for us non-torrenters), but they have taken the stance that you pay per Gb, and what you do with it is up to you.

Unfortunately, is the ol' adage of if its free it will be abused. Some people took the free national traffic too far, and the rest of us have to suffer because of it.

How do you access international content on national bandwidth? NZ is the size of 2 cities, there is a lot more interesting content "out there" than "in here".

One of the issues is that if national bandwidth is free then someone downloads illegal content once using international bandwidth, then many others get it off that one person using free national bandwidth. You limit the spread by making it not free.

XNet has such small margins, they have to make some money somewhere. Still, they do have Alkami servers for e.g. Windows updates and I think iTunes which counts as free data. And they do give free data to some game servers (e.g. Recoil). I do not have details, but the point is there are more free stuff than you think.
