Cordless phones and the more simple kinds of phones work fine with an SPA2102 but some of the more complicated ones have no dial tone.
How can one tell if it will work before plugging it in and trying it?

There are two different wiring types for RJ11/RJ12 patch leads. Most phones don't care however some will only work with a reverse cable.
I'm not sure what you mean by "complicated" phones - are you sure this is a regular analogue phone and not a Centrex / Digital phone?
Tizza5: By complicated i mean it has transfer buttons ect.....but deffinatly analog phones.
Ill try an RJ11
You can never have enough Volvos!
Niel: The issue with the cable is similar to mains wiring having a phase and neutral wire. With double insulated mains products there is no reference to earth so it does not really matter if you swap the 2 mains wires around, but with earthed products the neatral is expected to be close to earth potential and it does matter. Same on phone wiring, you have a tip and a ring wire and sometimes it matters depending on the model of phone you use.The only things dependant on polarity would be either PABXs or their system phones. The ordinary analogue phone had to work irrespective of polarity.
