I see that Vodafone uses 900 and 2100 Mhz frequencies.  Does anyone use 1800 in this country??  I know it's used with 1.8G DECT that's why I'm asking..

TIA

NZ Communications will also be using  GSM900/1800 for 2G and 2100 UMTS for 3G.

watch this space, 1800 will start to be used more and more, probably by Vodafone in particular as they attempt to manage bandwidth at 900mhz. (speculation) nothing has been stated by to this effect by Vodafone.

Interesting, and of course this makes sense for Vodafone as part of their nationwide W900/W2100 roll out.

Have Vodafone officially commented on this?

Opps I should have stated, "Speculation" next to that. its occuring in the states at the mo with AT&T and i have heard in Aussie it may be an issue also.

I dont believe Vodafone have said anything, unlikely too also until they start doing it, might cause them some grief with GSM only clients particularly in cities where 1800 would be used more heavily. With a certain 3rd player building what is shaping up to be a strong robust GSM 900/1800 network it will be interesting to see what happens.

I believe AT&T is having that exact problem on 1900 MHz in the states. Perhaps it would be an ideal time for Vodafone to provide EDGE to 1800Mhz parts of the network if they do this, although they are highly unlikely to enable EDGE based on Vodafone official and johnr's comments on Geekzone.

850mhz GSM is the freq they seem to most depleteing on At&T as they roll out 850UMTS to their network. 1900mhz GSM is their higher band i believe, but i could be wrong.

I would say John would be on the money, EDGE is a bit pointless for Vodafone with a 3G nationwide rollout happeing. GSM will eventually be shut down or run as an AS IS network for inbound roamers until its not worth operating.

With over 70% of cellphone users in NZ on prepay and only wanting a handset for voice and TXT I would say GSM is going to be around  for a while. Especially with incoming roaming and basic handsets are cheap compared to 3G handsets.

Yes that is true, but in 4 -5 years who knows, may be less.

It all depends on the variety and availability of 3g hardware and the LTE networks as well.

With Vodafone & NZ Comms both having GSM networks there will be choice but i guess it will come down to how quickly Vodafone like Telecom can move their clients to 3G only.

One thing to note is the way people operate their mobiles is changing. mobile data in what ever form is penetrating the prepaid market and slowly that will turn txt & voice callers into data users. Its called progression and it is happening.

When NZ operators start charging realistic prices for mobile data then I will think about it. On the 3 Network in Aussie you can get 6 GIG for $AUD39 per month and for contract users they will halve this price for the first six months and give you a free USB modem.
Virgin mobile in Aussie is offering for $AUD99 per month unlimited useage plus 1GIG data.
And Paul Brislen thinks NZ mobile consumers are getting a good deal. YEAH RIGHT.

Totally agree, this year I hope and believe that a change in calling & data costs will occur.

Once Telecom / Vodafone & NZ Comms can offer 7.2mbps / 14.4mbps possible connections, offering 2Gb for $59 bucks is a joke.

I would expect to see similar deals like 3 in Aussie, say$39 for 3gb, $49 for 10gb and so on & so forth. Maybe mirroring the landline broadband charges.

Once these networks are rolling and set up they are built for broadband and the ability to handle more and more data will grow.

I can see prices being dropped every where this year to grow and or retain clients.
