Well one good name change obviously deserves another :)

"One NZ (formally Vodafone) has changed their network name to ‘UpTheWahs’ for the rugby league season."

Am I the only one who thinks this is quite silly? The network name is there for a functional reason so you know which carrier you are connecting to. While most people would have this set to automatic, it's not the case for everyone - imagine coming to NZ as an international tourist expecting to be able to roam to One, or buying a local SIM and trying to set your phone to connect to One.

The people who actually need to know what carrier they are connecting to won't, and the people who don't need to know won't see or care about this. We've had a number of natural disasters and things recently where cellphone communications have been really important and this just seems like an unnecessary distraction.

They don't sponsor Fifa or WWE teams, they do Sponsor the 'wahs' (which is the sound their fans have made most over the last 15 years rofl)

For the record, I disagree with using the network name like this, it's dumb.

Looks more like a network outage indicator.

I am highly offended by this. "UpTheWahs" is too close to Up The Wazoo, slang for buttocks or anus.

The network name serves a practical purpose. It isn't there to promote sports teams or political purposes.

I feel the same way about my letter box but Labour keep putting misleading information in there.

That reads to me like they’re giving them the middle finger, as in, “up you”

Exactly. Pre One NZ, Vodafone changed it for other occasions like Māori language week which bought the redneck side out of NZ

Most of the public is behind it (same with MLW) and that’s a good thing. Up the Wahs!

I think this a a bit of lighthearted fun (and yes I am a Warriors fan)

The telcos changed their network name to messages about staying safe during Covid, Signiant Events, etc.

Guessing it is mainly affecting iphone users complaining, as the network name isn't showing at the top of my android but does at the top of on my iphone.
