So far been pretty stoked with how my new form of connecting to the interwibble is going, solid speeds, 3G 900MHz in most of the places I am, bar the other day when i was screaming in Auckland CBD. And bar not being able to game online.

I am having some odd issues with a couple of things:

  • Using the rubygems for the Heroku rails deployment platform, I am not able to authenticate with their servers. On a 'standard' broadband connection it is sweet, but I get 'authentication failed' when using Mobile broadband. Contacted the developers and they said it was standard HTTP Auth stuff - anyone have any insights why this would be the case?
  • Also, Google Talk often drops and has to reconnect - and Google Video Chat and Mic chat both make the actual Broadband connection completely drop (i.e. I have to reconnect the actual modem to the network). Do you think this is because of inherent high pings, or is Vodafone doing some sort of dirty packet sniffing ala use-your-mobile-to-voice-chat-you-cheap-bastard?
Not sure if anyone will have any insight into these issues, but it would be great if anyone had some pearls of wisdom :D

Thanks!

Hi Wigsgiw

Would you mind PMing some contact details as I would like to look into this issue from the Vodafone mobile core network side.

Thanks John

(I tried to send you a PM but you have this disabled)

We experienced the same problems yesterday over vodafone 3G (not 2G or wireless), with basic auth over SSL (for a iPhone ActiveSync connection to Small Business Server 2003.)

I believe this was part of a Auckland wide, most of the business day long problem with Vodafone 3G, also affecting voice.

All fixed now. :-) Must be all that new 3G gear they are putting in ready for June eh johnr?

Tyler - Parnell Geek - iPhone 3G - Lenovo X301 - Kaseya - Great Western Steak House, these are some of my favourite things.
