Rang up to signup for VFX, was informed a telecom account is needed:

So what happens if:

i dont have a telecom account (i live in a house i dont own, someone else hold the telecom account)
I have an account with a different provide (ie my homeline is with ie Orcon)

Does it mean i have to put the VFX account in the name of the telecom account holder?

2talk or iTalk are looking pretty good right now..

No Telecom account is required.

Are you wanting Fusion or to just add VFX to an existing broadband account. If you want Fusion I believe they can only go Naked DSL from an existing Telecom line. If it is just adding VFX to an existing broadband account it shouldn't have anything to do with the existing phone line.

Xnet has an agreement with telecom.They are only allowed to give out local numbers in someones local calling area.
Hence the requirement for the telecom account.

I too found that requirement/request for a Telecom account number on sign-up to be irksome.
A while ago I signed up for a VFX account - and they didn't seem to understand that not everyone with a phone line uses Telecom NZ. (I had my phone line from TelstraClear) They accepted my TelstraClear account number in lieu after much discussion!
And yes, I too understand that the requirement relates to ensuring that they only issue people with a number that is truly "local" re where they live and are using the new VFX phone number.
Other ITSPs (like 2Talk & ITalk) don't really care who they issue "local" numbers to - or more particularly, "where" they issue local numbers. Mind you it is a while since I last saw their sign-up processes. They may have changed by now.

Not required, it's a throw back from converting people from POTS lines to VFX. I'm about to signup for VFX and I only have a mobile phone.

Talk to a dealer who can make it quick and painless, flick me a PM if you want me to point you in the right direction.

I worked through this about a month ago...

I had a bundled phone/internet account with Orcon. I wanted to move to VFX but not lose my existing landline number. Had the phone account been directly with Telecom, the churn would have been pretty straightforward.

Process:

(1) Get XNet to initiate the number port from Orcon. That is, they (once you have authorised it) can 'pull' the authority for the existing telephone number from Orcon. You will know this has happened when your phone and internet stop working! In my case it took about a week (in the meantime, all keeps Orcon working as it was before...)

(2) XNet can then do a new connection for you. As this involves Telecom Wholesale, it can take several days. My case was 2.5 days. You should also at this stage make sure that you end your account with Orcon - it has effectively happened, at the point the phone number was taken 'from' from, but just do it to make sure you don't keep getting charged...

(3) At this point, you have your SIP set up in place, ready to go. I initially had a Linksys ATA ready to allow me to use my analogue phones (I later cut over to my own Asterisk server). XNet will have provided all config details for the ATA device and for the ADSL

(4) And when Telecom has done their stuff, you have a new (naked) ADSL connection through XNet, with your SIP/VOIP telephone system in place! In my case, a Telecom contractor came to my house to look at things (and was suitably appalled by my wiring!) but did not have to actually *do* anything - not sure of the purpose of the visit...

RISK: When you let go of your ADSL connection through Orcon, it effectively goes back into the pool. If you are in an exchange area that has a bigger demand for ADSL than they have ports at the exchange, you could *lose* your phone and internet. Be warned!!! In my case, a Telecom helpdesk guy, of all people, let me know that based on the attenuation on the line, it *appeared* that the exchanged did not seem to be highly subscribed, but there can, apparently, be no guarantees...

End result? Over about a 10 day period, I moved from Orcon to XNet with about a 2.5 day outage all up. I kept my original telephone number, and I'm very happy with the connection so far.
