Seein in today DomPost Infotech. Apparently TCL have decided not to roll out the 25Mbs plan in Wellington preferring to focus on national infrastructure instead.

While no big loss (speed isn't an issue with TCL, it's their data plans), they also apparently are not advertising any improved plans above 80G for $150.

I think once ADSL2 comes to my area I am switching

Wow, that's pathetic. And they aren't even notifying customers directly? How can they be allowed to hype something up, then let it never come to pass, without letting their customers know? Many people could have stayed with TelstraClear on the assumption of a 25Mbit plan coming out.

I've had it with TelstraClear. They're a bunch of crooks.

I disagree Screeb, think it through...

They are a business, we are in the middle of the worst financial crisis in recent memory. Most businesses are focusing on reducing costs and trimming the fat. Is investing in upgrading their cable network during a period in time where the goverment is getting involved in a fiber roll-out a sensible move that would return value to their shareholders - nope!

They have already purchased the required gear for the upgrade. They apparently did it at the same time they got the gear for Christchurch, but the gear for Wellington was delayed because of a "supply issue". That was at the start of last year, IIRC. The reasons you give are also not stopping other ISPs investing in ADSL2+ and VDSL2.

And there is still no excuse for not informing their customers. I shouldn't have to find this out through Geekzone.

Sounds ominous, like cable is being quietly put on the shelf as end of life.

I asked the question to the TC guy in the "ask the bossman" that MF put on a while ago with some of the companies about the viability of the network and they indicated it would be expanded and supported but this suggests otherwise.

I had cable briefly and it was utterly horrible (see blog posts) though bear in mind I was affected more than most becuase of a crowded "node" at the time which was apprently later updated.

Perhaps that's what they meant when they sent that letter in March 2009 saying "In the coming months we will be launching a totally new range of packages and services which will allow us to better meet our customers demands whilst continuing to offer real choice and competition in the market."

10Mbps is plenty for me, and I'm a HEAVY user :)

Interestingly enough, my partners father had ongoing internet problems with his TCL ADSL line recently because he was using his old Telecom provided D-Link modem/router. He upgraded to an ADSL2+ modem/router and has gone from a flakey 5Mbps to 13.5Mbps with very little stability issues!

If I can get that kinda speed through conventional ADSL2+ channels I don't even care if I stay on Cable anymore!

Why would you possibly need 25Mbps anyway? You're always going to be limited by the top speed at the other end of your connection. Unless you're VPN tunnelling around town on a personal WAN or something I just don't see the point? Sure it'd be nice to say I have 25Mbps but it just seems like bragging rights to me

I wouldn't necessarily believe everything you read in the paper.

DOCSIS3 is still very much a necessary upgrade for TCL's network to deliver some of the services they want the offer.

I'm sure the bean counters might start taking notice if customer churn and negative publicity becomes at issue when ADSL2+ and ULL from Vodafone Red and Orcon+ is deployed around Wellington.

That's a strange way of telling customers that the 25Mbit plan they promised isn't going to appear, especially since one would assume from the wording of the letter that that's when the 25Mbit plan IS coming out...

"we will be launching a totally new range of packages" -> "no, not the 25Mbit plan we promised, but you can figure that out, right?"... hmm...

I'd like to get the 4Mb I'm paying for my TCL cable plan. Isposure tells me I have reached 3.5Mb a few times but over the past few months it ranges from 1.6 to 2.7 (I know, I live near the top of Wadestown and the data loses speed coming up the hill.)

There is a brand new green cabinet 40 metres from place and I'm expecting more bang for my buck real soon now or there'll be another ex-TCL customer. Roll on 7 June.

What type of router do you have and what speedtest site are you using to measure this speed?

I get 8.5mbps on the Auckland WxC right now and my girlfriend is currently on a phonecall so QoS will kicking in on my router taking a fair bit off this.

I am on the 10mbps plan but the reality is you should be getting 4mbps on the 4mbps plan. There are no real network issues any longer.

I was using ISPosure, as I wanted to contribute to the testing. But I found this monitoring software flawed and buggy. It gave varying results every time it was run (even if minutes apart).

Hmmm. I hadn't seen ISPosure before (and not having a Windows box anywhere it wouldn't do me any good anyway) but they mention in their FAQ: "The Line Speed test, in Countries where the metric is available, uses isposure-specific testing servers located at key Internet Exchanges in your Country's core network to allow us to judge your internet line speed in the most accurate and efficient way possible."

TCL don't peer, so potentially that traffic is going overseas... Thus not giving a very accurate representation.

You really should be able to get a full 4Mb - try using a download manager to pull something Akamai hosted down - Apple software updates are what I generally use for testing purposes.

Sorry, probably all a bit OT.

If you want a bigger data plan, you could try this one from Actrix.

There are many variables here to factor in. Firstly do you use a router with your modem or your modem connected straight to your PC? Secondly what operating system are you using?

Due to many factors speedtest sites aren't necessarily a reliable test of true world speeds.

SB5100 is TCL supplied modem connected directly to the PC - no router. Vista Ultimate SP1 with all updates. 3 Gb, AMD 3800, etc
