Anyone figured out what OneNZ phone dollars are?

Is it an automatic reward system, or what?

I looked up my number using their App and it said something like 250+ points, but when logging in on PC the answer was only 50+ points.

Are they redeemable at any time?  Do customers have to apply for these points, a la loyalty scheme, or are they allotted each time a bill is paid?

Confusing.

It is confusing for me, too. From what I gathered, from time to time, they will give you free One Wallet Dollars - either just because, as part of a promotion or when you complete some action. You can then redeem these Dollars when you buy a new phone but I think it needs to be on an IFP.

Part of me wishes for them to just bring the contract subsidies from ten years ago. At least it would be clearer.

Its a "retainer" to try to make existing customers "sticky"

They're "giving" you a discount on new hardware, but on the other side, to claim it you'd likely need to sign on to a mid to high value monthly plan, with a term commitment,

But on the other side if you're already on such a plan, its an incentive for you to purchase a new phone and stay with One NZ and not go elsewhere at upgrade time....

Its also a way to stop grumpiness of existing customers, who get irate at upgrade time when all the telcos are running $X00 off if you are a new customer....

My take it that its been designed by marketers and retention teams

It's a nice idea but it's wasted on me as I don't tend to buy new phones from them. Ideally I'd like to gift them or transfer them to my Mum as she is in the market for a new phone, but they don't allow this 😕

Well, they do - but you must both be on the same billing account (which also rules out prepaid).

...which we aren't, so that's no good for me.

Then again, I suppose they may do it like that to stop people who don't know each other donating their dollars to strangers, which they then use to purchase a new phone for free?

Check out https://one.nz/legal/terms-conditions/one-wallet/

Here's some examples of what you could be eligible for:

  • Bill Bonus Offer (2% or 4% or 6% of your bill back up to $50 Phone Dollars per month on an eligible plan)
  • Connect More, Get More ($300 Phone Dollars for adding additional eligible mobile or broadband connection)
  • Device Offers (for buying a new iPhone on IFP on a particular Pay Monthly mobile plan)
  • Simon boost (for buying any new device $199+ on IFP and joining on a Pay Monthly mobile plan)

My simon boost was $34, for a monthly plan in the range of $200-$300. I wonder how much you need to spend each month on OneNZ services to get a meaningful 'Simon boost'. $34 wont go far towards a new phone, and certainly wouldn't make me loyal to OneNZ.

I didn’t realise but apparently the Dollars are applied monthly across the IFP period, not upfront.

They are advertising their "scody $1 deals" as a much easier way to understand exactly the same thing...
