Wife and I are off to Ireland for 4 weeks plus one day in six months. Have read notes about roaming on our Prepay Flex plans. Went to OneNZ store in mall today to clarify some stuff. Store was loaded up with queues!! So here's some queries you folk should be able to answer in a jiffy, and jump the queues!!

I know to turn off mobile data before i leave NZ. I know to Text 777 when I land at Dublin. I know that, on our plan, we can buy roaming packages (Add on) for one day or for a week - by Text to 756. And that the Add ons can only be purchased when overseas. I know that I have to pay per package as we purchase. So, I should ensure both our prepay accounts have enough credit to cover Roaming Add ons. We both have the OneNZ App on our phones.

Have I got that right so far.

More queries ...... As we are in Ireland for 4 weeks plus one day can we purchase four (monthly) Add ons plus one (One Day) Add on packages in one transaction. Or would we have to buy only one Add on package per day or as needed over the period we are in Ireland.

We transit via San Francisco on way to Ireland. If I (just me) want to use my mobile while in transit can I follow procedure as above to connect into roaming "mode" and then buy, say, just one Day Add on pack? And, if I do not use up all of the data, txts etc of that package will the balances carry over to my roaming account that I sign up to once in Ireland?

Would welcome any answers and/or other tips to our understandings as above.

Why SMS 777 when you land in Ireland?

Are you using an esim capable phone? Plenty of better options than telco roaming for data as you go around the place.

Oops. No not TXT 777 on landing.

It is I that will receive the TXT. Then I can buy bundle/s.

Further, I'm happy to keep my own phone and use OneNZ roaming packages. Have all needed phone numbers etc for relatives and so on we shall be meeting up with.

The SMS from 777 is called ' Roaming Welcome Message '

If you are using roaming packages why would you disable mobile data?

Four weeks is incredibly expensive on prepay offerings. You would need to buy four weekly packages and (iirc) activate them each the day before the previous expires. You can activate them on top of each other and their usage limits will be used in order of expiry but their expiry dates do not stack.

If you need the calls/texts then it’s at least $88nzd for 1GB per week 4GB total. A comparable esim is $11usd for 5GB over 30days (Airalo), $16usd for 10GB over 30days (Nomad). As One NZ allow wifi calling overseas you can do the manual network selection workaround to force wifi calling via the esim, this will let you use your One NZ phone number to make calls without having to purchase a roaming package.

One NZ roaming instructions advise "Before you leave (NZ)

  • we suggest you turn your mobile data off before you leave NZ
  • update phone operating system
  • once you land and have purchased a Roaming Bundleplease switch mobile data back on

And, my phone is not esim capable. So, its One NZ roaming for me. It'll cost about $110 for our time overseas (five bundles in total) to give overlap, and use phone whilst in transit. Happy with that.

Thanks for comments and advice.

Someone at work was hit with the charge going to australia and leaving australia because they didnt do that, and when they got to australia they didnt swap sim before getting into aussie coverage. If they recommend this then people who are not that smart will be able to get pointed to this when they are billed the $8 or whatever it is now when the plane gets in range but they have not swapped sims yet.

I’d say the annoyance of having to remember to buy the packs weekly would be worth it alone.

Also if they had enough money to not worry then I’d recommend getting a modern phone with 5G and esim capabilty. Maybe even switch to a plan with unlimited roaming, if that even exists here. The overseas esims have unlimited plans cheaper than plans here iirc.

I would never buy roaming services from NZ telcos, they are so far behind what is on offer in this day and age.

@Gradine ... had a friend went to Ireland a few months ago ... bought a 'Travellers SIM' at Dublin airport ... about $40 for the month and included unlimited calls, txt, data and the like.  Simply utilised What'sApp for those contacts still in NZ.

Your phone may have dual SIM capability too to avoid fiddly SIM swapping.
