While this is far from a pressing issue for me, I do like to change things around regularly...

But for this one, I'm enough of an Asterisk neophyte to need help.

I've got the asterisk running and basic config, but I'd like to build on it - maybe being able to ring into my home from work and then be able to make a call out using my VFX service (I'm not allowed to make toll calls from work!).

And maybe some distinctive ring tones, etc, based on caller ID.

Is there anyone who would (offline!) be willing to work me through the steps? I'm not obtuse, but have yet to find web resources that were clear enough for me to use as the basis for changing things around just now.

Are you running pure Asterisk or an Asterisk distribution such as trixbox that uses FreePBX as the GUI?

Hah! Just walking back from an out of office coffee and realised I should have clarified that...

I'm set up with trixbox but am comfortable working with the underlying asterisk config files rather than the gui as required. My original setup was developed based mostly on the (excellent!) guides from tonyhughes...

Asterisk/Trixbox on a server with little else but some fileserving for my home, a router and an ATA, using (at this stage) only analogue phonesets on the system.

Creating an option to dial in, get a request for a PIN number for authorisation and then getting a dialtone so you can dial out is dead simple. Send me a PM in a day or so reminding me if I forget to post something tonight showing how to do it!

Excellent - just the sort of setup that will get me enough background to go further on my own.

Thank you very much for offering to write something up - I do think it might have wider applicability than just my request. One of my aims in changing to VFX was to 'take it a bit further', to start finding the things that can really show how it makes better use of telephone technologies to do them over IP, etc.

I need some clarification.

The SPA3102 is basically an ATA and an IP router built into one (well, along with some obviously snazzy software to allow for the hop on/hop off and gateway etc).

So with an 'ordinary' ATA and a plain old (high enough quality to sort out QOS prioritising perhaps...) and 'doing it in software', what would be the real difference? Note: I'm not saying I don't wanna buy a new toy - just wondering what, theoretically, an SPA3102 could do for me that I might not be able to configure/cobble together from my existing hardware, given my newfound interest in making it 'more better'...

If you go into PBX Settings do you have a module called DISA under "Internal Options & Configuration"?

If not go to module admin, check for updates, click on DISA and then click on download and install. Once this is done you will have the DISA module visible.

Now go to DISA and click on ADD DISA

Enter a name for this DISA such as Inbound Access, enter a PIN (I'd recommend 6 digits minimum), 10 for response and 5 for digit timeout and from-internal as the context. Now click on submit changes and apply configuration.

Now go into the IVR menu. If you don't have an IVR created already you need one to be able to select an option. One of the options available for each number is a DISA option. Select this and from the drop down menu select the DISA you created earlier.

When you now dial in and hear your IVR you can press the button you mapped this to, enter your PIN # and have DISA access to the system. You have the same security access as defined by the contest you use, which in this case is from-internal which is used by all local extensions.

The SPA3102 has an FXO port (you can also get cards for your Asterisk PC instead). It allows you to feed PSTN (or other devices that simulate PSTN) into Asterisk.
