Hi,
I'm currently having no end of trouble trying to send a gmail with a <2Mb attachment.
I'm on TelstraClear cable modem in Kapiti, have a Linksys RVS4000 firewall/router, and have my main laptop, Ip-PBX, etc behind that.
I'm on the LightSpeed 20Gb plan, so that should be 10Mbs down, & 2Mbs up. No other devices on my LAN are doing anything much at all.
I've tried using different dns servers, but that made no difference.
Even the loading of gmail before I try sending the email with (small) attachment is very slow. So too was the loading of geekzone actually.
I have cleaned out temp files on my laptop, rebooted, run "ccleaner".

I'm about to power cycle my cable modem & router.

I haven't tried talking to the TCL helpdesk yet. (dreading the wait / confusion that would involve.)

Just thought I'd check here and see if anyone else if sufferring similarly.

hmm not today, but I am in Chch so may not count for much had this problem though ... 2 weeks ago more or less, ...

Also, try using the Clear DNS - don't use OpenDNS on TCL.

Thanks for the responses.
I'm not running Torrent and have restarted the router & cable modem - no change though.
I'm currently using 203.97.78.43 & 44. (Before that was using 203.96.152.4 & 12)
What's the IP addresses of the Clear DNS servers?

I still think (guess) this is a DNS issue, as pretty much all browsing is slow.
I'm going to try on the other laptop here at home now - see if that is any quicker.

I found this page listing DNS servers: http://www.nzconnection.net/DNS_Servers

From there, it looks like the Clear servers you mention Maurito may be 203.97.33.14 & 203.97.37.14.
Is that right? (I'll try them anyway.)

Am currently trying from my work laptop (plugged in here at home) and using my default paradise DNS servers, getting the same very slow response.

OK then, if 43 & 44 are working fine for you, then it has to be something else.
Either something screwy on my LAN, router or laptop, or something awry with my particular TCL cable modem connection.

temporarily set the mtu on your NIC to 1000 or so and see if that helps? (probably not it, but worth trying?)

We had similar problems when we were using non Telstra-clear dns servers.

Mainly slow or not loading external js/css files in alot of cases (g-maps, gmail, yahoo, hotmail, facebook etc) for some retarded reason unfathomable to me along with slow dns lookups.

As soon as we switched to their dns the problem magically disappeared though, other than the odd hiccup when their dns servers go on the blink.

Update:
Well I'm embarrassed to say that I finally did some of the basic problem analysis on this little problem of mine, that I should have done back at the beginning.
I have confirmed that one other laptop in my house is performing just fine. It is on one switch port of my router. All the other kit in my house is hanging off another switch port on my router, and that port is reporting receive errors.
So now I should be able to move things around to isolate the problem.

By the way, I did try changing the MTU setting on my router from 1500 to auto-negotiate, It didn't make any difference. I'm pretty sure that 1500 is the right thing to use on the cable modem network.

Update: Problem fixed.
Hi all, just thought I'd let you know that I have finally found and fixed the problem that was causing me slow access.
It turned out to be the combination of a Linksys SD2008 dumb Gb switch connecting to one of the Gb LAN ports on the Linksys RVS4000 router. Once I replaced the SD2008 with an SD2016 dumb 100Mb switch all my problems disappeared. I guess they didn't auto negotiate properly. Interestingly, a laptop running at 1Gb connected to one of the Gb LAN ports on the RVS4000 worked fine throughout.
Just glad to have everything going fine now. Full 10Mbs download & 2Mbps upload, lovely fast browsing response, and good quality on my VoIP calls in & out.
