Im moving house in a coupla weeks and the new place is wired for Cable.
Currently looking at 10meg/20gig cable plan, plus phone.

Anyone got any warnings, pointers or things I should be looking for?

No intention of getting Cable TV at this stage.  Thinking ill evaluate Freeview|HD instead...

Located in Upper Hutt.

Yes: Don't do it. Stick with ADSL. You'd be better off with something like Telecom Adventure (20GB, ADSL2+). It's $20 less and likely faster, and has lower latency. The only reason to ever get cable nowadays is if you NEED 2Mbps upload, which you most likely don't.

I'd recommend looking into a VoIP solution instead of renting a landline also. Cable is more than capable of supporting it.  And this would make it even cheaper than ADSL.

Well there's two contrasting views to start with.
I'm not going to be going down the VOIP path at this stage, quite happy with POTS and am happy to eliminate several layers of the OSI model, at least for now.

What's the baseline latency on cable?

Have to admit i'm keen to have something discrete from Telecom NZ, as we have a T-Stick which is in essence our backup option, and I try to keep primary and backup on seperate infrastructures for obvious reasons.

I'm ditching Xnet DSL, for the record.

Sorry, I have to totally disagree with you there.  I'm on TelstraClear's 10meg/20gig cable plan and live in Upper Hutt and it is lightening fast - very little slowdown and latencies far lower than people I know on ADSL2+ connections.  I'm a reasonably heavy gamer and my pings and consistently lower than the majority of players on NZ servers and so too are my friends pings who are also on TCL cable.  Also the 2mbps upload speed comes in very handy.

TCL cable 20 gig, I would never move to ADSL while in a cable area. Other benefits of TC (cable network) is no contract terms. I would personally recommend the VOIP option also!

I live in Upper Hutt and have a TelstraClear Cable 10GB plan along with an Xnet/Vfx $11.25 Voip phone line which is much cheaper than POTS for monthly rental and tolls (but has no capped calling). Voip Phone line has been in use for roughly 2 years now with few outages except during power cuts - then my mobile comes in handy.

yeah, the emergency-services be-prepared part of me can't conceive of dropping POTS. But i'm glad to hear TCL Internet isn't all bad. I'll ring em this week.

You dont own a cellphone?

$40ish a month is a lot to pay just to feel a bit more warm and fuzzy about possibly being able to get to a phone to call for help.

Your friends with higher latencies presumably don't have interlacing disabled.

To all those other people who say they wouldn't switch from cable to ADSL, care to give a legitimate reason besides upload speed? I don't think you can.

Go for cable if you're within TCL cable area... won't use ADSL as I have tasted cable and never would go back... and single billing is so easy and hassle free.
