I have heard a rumour that Vodafone are launching 3g Monday 8th August? is this true. I don't even know how I have this date in my head/heard it. Can anyone eleborate?

Also my hucky ol 3G phone suddenly livened up the other day,, it stopped as soon as it started though but somethin's going on.

what handset have you got?
I haven't heard any dates, I know they announced it would be in an august-november window pushing it back from a long touted june july launch.

I have also heard rumblings that its more likely to be sooner rather than later and with the release of data for the latest quarter it may be hurried along because telecom mobile is performing well at the moment.

I'm as interested as everyone else to find out

I have heard the opposite - later rather than sooner as Vodafone have had to significantly increase their initial 3G coverage offering. Unfortunately building new cellsites is not a 5 minute job with the RMA here in New Zealand..:-(

I havent heard either way, but think it would be in their best interests to launch with the bestr coverage possible - even if that means end of year...

a generic branded "3" device. might be like an LG, it's "roaming" from 3 australia but is on standard GSM, though it beeped to say "videozone" (3g) the other day but quickly stopped. it might be nothing but a glaiimer of hope. I have a voucher awaiting the day they release it to rush and get a handset.

The three nearest voda shops here have started putting up their 3g displays... no phones, but they have '3g' and 'Vodafone Live' on them.

Must be coming soon, or at least selling handsets soon.

I've heard August 14th from couple of good sources, which would allow Sunday night advertising blitz on TV. Certainly a lot of noise pointing to mid-August.

But so many questions:
- What will the coverage be?
- What will the data rates be, downlink and uplink? And how is this affected by heavy voice usage?
- What will latency be?
- What new 3G pricing plans?
- What will work when roaming, e.g. 3G video calls?
- With a 3G PC data card, can you do video calls? Will need some PC application cause the data card will be a full 3G 'phone'.
- When will we get first Windows Moible 5 + 3G device that supports video calls?
- Are video calls actually useful or cool? Will they bring about a new paradigm in calling or just be a niche application?
- How much extra for a video call over a normal voice call?
- Etc...

Now if only Vodafone had insiders blogging like Microsoft does, we might get some answers.

Incredibly so! They have managed to awake the sleeping dragon (Telecom) and now nod off themselves.

I think Vodafone's pricing will be very interesting indeed. No other Vodafone network has a CDMA carrier to compete against that is currently kicking their ass. If Vodafone want to seriously compete they need to look what what 3 are doing in the market place - good value bundled packages that convince customers that they are getting a bargain and also increase APRU. Launching a few more plans above the current $40 consumer option that offer true value for money in a good way to start - Vodafone have already done this in Australia. Video calls also have to be at the same price as voice calls for people to even be the slightest bit interested.

They have to come with very good cases... Their current mix (Q2 2005) is 1.929 million customers, with 78% of these using prepaid connections.

The ARPU for prepaid is very low (NZ$326) compared with postpaid (NZ$1726).

They should really invert the prepaid/postpaid balance, thus increasing the revenue without necessarily increasing prices.

I think they have high prices because of low postpaid uptake.

Verizon are an EVDO operator and Voda own approx 25% of Verizon so they are very aware on what EVDO is capable of.

Expect max 384kbps download and max 64kbos upload on UMTS. Latency around 120ms.

I think the whole prepaid/postpaid model should be canned. The fact it's still exists could well be the reason the average APRU is so low for prepaid customers. The prepay model is far more efficient than the post paid model with no credit issues & no bills to post out and process. Prepay customers tend to be clumped in as the "poor" customers yet they make up the bulk of the customers probably out of mere convenience. Why should they not be able to take advantage of the features of a plan but still use a top up card to pay for this? What Voda did in oz with their bundling which offers identical value plans whether you are on prepay or contract was a rather significant switch from what anybody was offering. The whole mobile market in oz was a shambles of plans and is now very simple. It has managed to significantly increase the prepay customer spend and has been a wake up call for everybody. Why would the same model not work in NZ? And when are Vodafone finally going to realise that people will not move from prepay to a plan because they don't want to lose their number? It's a basic requirement not rocket science.

the only incentive for me to change number if/when i upgrade is a simple number.. and those are the hardest to get
