Hi everyone,

I just registered with geekzone and I am glad that you guys have a good forum going.

Has anyone used the Nokia N90 before? Any thoughts / reviews from New Zealand users?

Only parallel imported shops are selling the N90 right now. Does anyone know when it will be officially released in New Zealand? It's been out in other countries for 1.5 months and I know it's coming in the first week of October in Aussie.

Okay, here are my current options. Please tell me which option - if you were me - you would take:

1. Waiting for the phones be to officially released here for around the same price ($1499) as a parallel importer.
2. Getting one from Australia for only $1100 ($NZD).
3. Get one from a parallel importer here in NZ ($1499) and get 3 months warranty.

I don't have a phone now so I am urgently in need of one, but don't want to make a rash decision.

depending on your concerns you could always invest in a cheap gsm handset.. approx 90-100 dollars solving the phone problem and then you can buy when you think its appropriate

Can someone tell me if this phone works with vodafone's 3G data network? I read it supports UMTS, then I read only EDGE data speeds, I would hate to spend $1500 on a phone that only goes as fast as GPRS in NZ.

If you want a phone with a nice auto-focus camera I would get the k750i for half the price.

What's the big appeal on the N90 to you? Looks like a brick with a great screen to me.

If I were you and making this investment in a phone I would wait and try and get it subsidized on contract.

Yes, it does support NZ's 3G network.

The reason why I want it is because:
1) It is Nokia
2) It is a flip phone
3) It has good PDA functions (which I require - I used to have the i-mate JAM PDA phone)
4) It can store as many sms-es as one wishes
5) High quality video recording

Sure, it is big but if you compare that with other PDA phones (i-mate etc), the size is quite decent.

The phone will work in NZ on GSM / GPRS / WCDMA - UMTS (Vodafone 3G)

The only issues is Vodafone Live. This will depend when Vodafone enable the handset to use Vodafone Live. They customise it for different phones.

You dont need support as the phone is a 60 series Symbian platform lots of support and info out there. All Vodafone will support you on is accessing Vodafone Live and that shouldnt be a concern as pleanty of over portals etc.

Use Vodafone insurance in case you loose it or damage it as its a pricey phone. Nokia are reliable generally so you shouldnt worry about it being faulty.

But bear in mind if you want full track downloads fron Vodafone Live 3G you will need the same software version as the New Zealand phone. As this has not been released here you may need to reflash or upgrade the phone at a later date. Different countries have different software like if you source from Ozy that should I think be ok but from say Hong Kong - China it will have different firmware.

I advise to take a closer look at the N90 to those loving technologies and would overpay for them. A device with a similar filling and a more customary design will appear in the Nokia line in February 2006.

Regarding Phone Insure - which I have - it won't be able to cover for the N90 since there is no N90 on the NZ market yet, officially. They will find a "similar" phone = 6680, which is a serious downgrade. Please tell me if I am wrong, I would be interested to know.

I don't mind not having Vodafone Live actually... it's a waste of money. I can just load the songs from my computer:)

Okay then I am right. They will replace your phone with a "similar model" if your phone model is not available in NZ yet.

Johnr ring Vodafone and ask how to synch, using the memory card or help you configure the phone to connect to your laptop etc etc.

They will advise go talk to retail or use the Wireless Portal site.

What I was refering to was that Vodafone will only support you for there product and services like voice calls Data Plans Txting voicemail sms etc not device support.

Vodafone Live is generally the one you will have issues with ie download did not work or no content or phone not supported.

Its not a dig at Vodafone Im just stating dont look to Vodafone for phone support.

Have you had a look at the Nokia 6680

I have used this phone and is a approved NZ Vodafone 3G handset.

It was easy to synch to the pc with the Nokia PC Suite and cable. Also you can download the Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0. This converts your large sized mp3's to the amr and for vids in the mpg format to .3gp

Means you can play all your vids amd songs on your phone.

There are so many new phones out around christmas with Sony Ericsson having some great handsets on the horizon.

Its a tough choice and you need to decide really what you want to do as the N91 is coming next year and thats closer to a music player.

The 6680 has memory problems, or actually "RAM" issues. You cannot multi-task. I had one and it kept on telling me that it is running out of memory; I close the programs (by pressing down the # key) but it continues to say it's out of memory. Everytime I watch a video it would 80% of the time ask me to close programs. Quite annoying.

I am looking for more of a PDA phone, rather than a music phone. The N90 is fine with it's MP3 player. I wouldn't want to be the first N91 purchaser because it will be the first phone with a hard drive and most likely it'll require a few years' of tweaking before they can be efficiently / effectively made.
