Hi, I live in the UK at the moment but am about to emigrate to NZ.

I would really like to get the new Orange M5000 as soon as it comes out but would this work on the NZ 3G network?

It will work on Vodafone just fine - providing it is not locked to the Orange network. It will be sold here as i-mate Jasjar (check our Smart Devices Database).

Just a note following on from above post, unit will not work on Telecoms mobile network (TNZ use CDMA 1X/EVDO)

Here in the UK, we get substantial reductions on handset prices if we buy with a contract with the mobile phone company. Is this the same with Vodafone in NZ? Looking at their website it seems like they do sell the handsets but they are full price and you buy your contract seperately.

If this is the case, I'll probably just get a i-mate unlocked and use it on orange and use it over in NZ when I get my Vodafone contract.

If you can get a cheaper handset in the UK, and you are sure it is not SIM locked, then it will work here. Except that some specific Vodafone Live! customisations (mostly the DRM-base stuff) will not be available.

Seeing this is the M5000, then I wouldn't worry, because there is little to no support for Vodafone Live! on smart devices in general (only on feature phones).

But if you plan to use a M5000 then I would imagine you are not part of the target segment of this service anyway.

Well, I've just ordered my M5000. Hopefully get it tomorrow. I'll be flying out to NZ in a couple of weeks so we shall see if it works - it looks like it should do...

make sure you have it SIM unlocked, otherwise it is only useful as a roaming device in NZ

most devices sold in UK are "cheaper" because they are SIM Locked due to the subsidy from the network provider. that's how they can lock you in to their network while you pay on contract.
