Do vodafone actively use the Voice Message waiting signal on their mobile network?

I bought a Nokia 6230 in Hong Kong earlier this year, and in May I received a 'you have a voice message waitng' notification on my phone. Ever since then I've had the little mark on my phone screen that looks like a little tape, or a B on its side at the top of my screen (also the same symbol that is on the '1' key) that means I have a voice message. However, I have no voice messages waiting on this phone (prepay) or on the contract phone that I have set to be forwarded to this phone. Is this a glitch - should I ring up vodaone and get the flag cleared, or do I really have a voice message somewhere in the ether?

Do vodafone actually set this symbol when there is a voice message waiting?

Vodafone New Zealand do not use the service you are speaking of I would say its a handset issue and cause you purchased the handset overseas this makes it a import so you may have issues getting support. I would say there is a option on the handset to disable this somewhere!

Hmm, that doesn't make sense. The 6230's sold in NZ from what I gather use the same firmware as used elsewhere in the world. Vodafone in NZ haven't customised the phone to use Live or anything, so I don't see how it could be the handset..

It could just be a handset issue or setting nothing to do with the firmware its just a bug full stop! have you tried a master reset on the phone. It can't be the network or every other customer in New Zealand with that handset would have the same issue!

Hmm, this would be true, however I thought this flag would be network controlled. By master reset I gather you mean the 'Restore Factory Settings' option. I guess this will wipe all phone books, photos etc on the phone, as I haven't carried one out before

It would not wipe the SIM card but would clear just about everything else. Do at your own RISK please don't come back to me moaning cause you lost some info you wanted to keep.

Nah, thats fair cop, I'm well aware that what I do on my phone is my own responsibility.. I can resync things like the phone books back from Microsoft Outlook and photos etc back from the PC.

That would be the best idea and put your SIM into another Nokia 6230 if possible and see if that icon comes back.

You would have thought so, there are two options there. One is call voice mail, and one is voice mail service number.

I thought the icon would clear on using the call voice mail option but it doesn't... Maybe its because you have to hang up manually on vf voicemail - maybe if the voicemail call was terminated by vodafone then it will clear the mark.

Guesswork...

I thought all nokias had the option to clear voice mail icon. All the ones ive owned did, Telecom and Vodafone. Thats very odd

You're quite right. Searching on the internerd, I can see phone manuals that mention the third option on the menu. It doesn't appear on mine. The manuals usually say that this is a network switchable option.

I think a factory reset is in order. I'll do one tonight.

Send me a private msg with your mobile no and I'll remove it for you. This is enabled and disabled as an SMS with a special setting so I can simply send an SMS to your phone which can enable and disable this setting. It has nothing to do with Vodafone's VoiceMail platform.

This has to lead to another question, why do GSM networks not use this feature? They send out SMS's to tell you that you have a voicemail so I fail to see why they don't use this feature. If you get an SMS from Vodafone telling you that you have a voicemail if you could easily mean to check it later on and forgot where as if you VM system is set up to send out the VM enable SMS and to send out another VM disable SMS once you have read all new messages you have a visual indication that there are messages waiting.

I see how it all works now... Rather than you sending me the message I'll have a bit of a laugh with Panuworld or Logomanager I think, and clear it myself. A search on 'Flash SMS' on the internerd helped. Thanks for your offer though.

I think that I must have received a text with just the right combination of characters in it that day, and the phone interpreted it wrongly.

The reason that vf don't use it normally would seem to be that not all phones interpret the characters correctly, and so the flags wouldn't be set on the phone. Older phones wouldn't know what to do with them at all, and there seem to be reports out there of the RAZR phones for instance getting them wrong. I would have thought that a combination of the special characters and the full message would have been ideal, so both old and new phones could interpret them.

I just thought I would report my success here - I downloaded PanuWorld, and I got this to send the appropriate FlashSMS to my phone via my bluetooth connection (PanuWorld doesn't document that). The voicemail icon disappeared straight away.

No factory reset required :)
