Hi Geekzone,

We have a friend over from the UK who is on Vodafone UK with an iPhone.  He's roaming over in NZ also on the Voadfone network.
I am on 2degrees but outside of their cells therefore also on the same Vodafone network really.

I send him a text message and he replies to it.
My message arrives 3 times on his phone and his reply never arrives on mine.
We try this again, my message gets to him, his never arrives at mine.
Third attempt, mine arrives on his phone, his reply does not get to me.

Is this normal, and should we expect this kind of hit rate?  Do other people not get text messages from abroad?
What happens to those text messages that simply never arrive?

Also, we can both call each other no problems so there's no issue with the numbers.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

p.s. I know I am on 2degrees so should maybe put this in another forum but most of this is going through Vodafones network.

Vodafone UK is still not a supported customer for SMS from 2degrees. A list of networks is here

I'm actually surprised it's working at all, I have a VF UK SIM and tried it a few weeks ago for somebody and the messages were going nowhere.

That's weird they are not supported.
He receives all the ones I send to his VF UK sim.

It's not wheird - 2degrees only have a very limited number of roaming partners and interconnects compared to Vodafone and Telecom. It's just unfortunate that Vodafone UK is not supported, your best bet would be to contact 2degrees and see if they have any further updates.

OK, thanks for the info.

(I meant it was weird that he received my txts when Vodafone UK isn't supported)

There are plenty of ways of routing messages, some of which don't always have a reply path.
