I've actually found the 3G network in Wgtn to be fairly impressive so far. Inbuilding coverage in parts of the CBD is better than GSM, I've had no call dropouts in several places where GSM drops out and I've been a passenger in a car and watched streaming video all the way from Upper Hutt to Island Bay (a video session can only last for 30 mins however so I had to restart) and found it susperb with only 2 small places where it rebuffered. I've also used way too much data this month playing with a SIP softphone hooked up to my Asterisk PBX and found that quite acceptible over 3G despite the high latency. The only downsite is no 3G coverage in Stokes Valley since it's one of only 2 sites in Wgtn that has omnidirectional aerials for the GSM site so had nowhere to cosite gear on the mast. Hopefully they'll do something about this soon..

Compare this to Auckland where Vodafone's network seems to still be suffering from serious problems..:-(

After reading this story again does anybody know exactly how this billing problem occured? There is no such thing as a 3G data plan as all data is the same whether it's GPRS or 3G.

UMTS network's typically have a different identifier for billing record purposes, but most carriers do the sensible thing and don't charge diffirentially. I suspect that this customer has a special deal with Voda, and the people who set up the billing tables for the special deal screwed up.

I still get overcharged, it's just their archaic billing system which is a dinosaur from the Bellsouth days. which will be upgraded soon.

Still even at overharging, their WAP prices are still half of the exorbidant rates Telecom charge.

Same here. Even though I'm getting charged for any GPRS session (MMS or vlive), I find the vlive news rates a lot more attractive than the xtra portals.

Vodafone says it is very disappointed that Food and Commodity Brokers did not receive the level of service Vodafone aspired to provide.

I'm sure.

Just plugged in a new 3G VF card in Christchurch and was mobile within 15min :)

Gotta do some traveling later today so will see how it goes, used 10MB in as many minuites just from general email, web, etc so glad I didn't opt for a lesser plan :)

sbiddle - What were you streaming at? 56kbps?? I have found it doesn't work at 300kbps and it is not reliable at 128kbps.

Where as my T3G card has been rock solid at 300kbps from Wellington Airport to the city - and it works in the Mt Vic tunnel.

All Voda Live RTSP feeds are 128kbps 3GP feeds.

Both carriers have their advantages and disadvanatges.

T3g (EVDO over !RXTT) has a better footprint and is faster as it's built from the ground-up on existing CDMA technology,

3g (UMTS) is really a tacked-on-to-GSM Evolution path so it's not as fast, or reliable, and coverage is limited. I think they (voda) have done a good job of it Except for Auckland CBD where it's dabolical.

Remember when they tacked Digital onto Analog 025... UGH! it was horrible.

both technologies SUCK batteries.

GSM's varient has many more plethora of so-so consumer toy phones to Excellent tools.
CDMA's varient has 3 decent devices (harrier, Datacard, new pocketpc)
The rest like the Sanyo's are not EVDO capable but have SIP access (P2T) and a video streaming capability over 1RXTT

Vodafone has one data rate for all traffic,
Telecom has split pricing for WAP and standard data (wap is plain ripoff)

They are marketed quite differently,
Telecoms aims for the business Dollar and email..
Vodafone use it as a vehicle to pump more revenue through VLIVE as a consumer level.
The phone to phone video streaming (conferencing) is VERY useful for business however.

P2T and Video are MIP not SIP. Mobile Data is SIP.
