Hey all. First time poster here. I was trying to get some help about trying to get a good connection to xbox live at my new place on the GPforums but I'm getting no love so I thought I'd bring it over here. This is my origional post, I'd appriciate any help I can get. Thanks :

Moved into a new flat not to long ago. Bought a new router (for Telstra cable internet), got a Belkin N+ 300 (xbox is wired, not wireless). Bought a new Xbox360. Migrated my account (back on silver for the moment). But I can't seem to download demos at the moment.

I tried downloading Skate 3... it gets to about 20% then just says "Cannot download this demo" quickly and then snaps back to the browser. This happened several times (sometimes it only gets to 13%... or even less before it hangs then stops). I reset the modem, router, and xbox... still no love.

I tried the splinter cell demo... Same story but can't even get to 10%.
...
RESET Everything...AGAIN!
...
Tried Dirt 2 (figured cause it was older there would be less people trying to download it) ... Got to 2% then hung... and died.

My internet on my computer seems to be working fine. And the xbox doesn't seem to have any trouble signing into Live so I'm not sure on where to start trouble shooting this.

At my previous flat with Telstra Cable everything worked fine and I never had any troubles whatsoever! Can the combined minds on GP forums AND now geekzone please help me :) _b Cheers _b

The Xbox has a network diagnostic tool built in, can you run that from the settings menu and see what it says?

There might be a problem with the cable going from the Xbox to the router.  For some reason it sounds like it's timing out partway through the download so maybe check any logs on your router if you can too.

OK Cool! Will try it again today. May come back for a bit of help regarding finding, and understanding the router logs. I'm competent with this sort of stuff but I'm out of my depth at the moment.

Thanks again for the quick response. I'll try a few things today and get back with what I found :)

I think you might find that this is a port problem, had the same issue when I tried to use thier Zune service with a new router. Cant remember any of the port settings but I think you can find it on the XBox support pages.

You may want to drop a quick email to the Helpdesk and get them to check your connection, just to be sure it's been installed properly.

Cheers.

Hey every one. Some progress!!!!

I took the router out of the equation and it worked fine! no hang ups or anything! So the problem is the router... can I get some help on how to configure this to work WITH the router?

...thanks.

Ok so I've tried this guide as well for the router but no luck :(

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

you probably need to forward the xbox live ports.. check out www.portforward.com for help.
also is there a firewall running on the router? try turning it off and testing the connection. at least that way you can eliminate the firewall as being a possible cause.

OK. So it seems the guide I followed earlier was a port forwarding guide. So I've done the port forwarding for all the ports required for XBOX Live.... that gave me no love.

Just tried it with the fire wall disabled.... no luck. Got to 7% rather slowly... then hung. :(

Anymore suggestions anyone? :(

If your router has UPnP and there are no known security problems with it turn it on. Your problems should just disappear.

Xboxs UPnP well with every router I have seen.
