I read the Kindle coming to NZ will use Vodafone's network and we will have free 3G data on it? If I'm correct, couldn't we just open the case, take the SIM card out and use it in a normal cellphone/laptop with a 3G modem? Not saying I'll do it because mum would flip if I opened hers (I have to buy her one but she's taking it off my laptop debt :D).

I'm just wondering, because when her's breaks I know what I'll be salvaging.

1. Pretty sure there is no sim card in the kindle but could be wrong.

2. Even if there is a sim card in the kindle and you do manage to take it out somehow and put it in your phone, ONLY downloading kindle books from the kindle store is free and browsing wikipedia. Normal web browsing is charged at 99cents/MB to your amazon account.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Well that idea just struck me and I was just wondering if it would work or not. Because they said it does run on Vodafones network. And even if it did run on another network they would use sim card anyways unless they brought out Telecoms on CDMA network so they can just send us the US Kindles they use on Verizon / Sprint (Not sure which one but they're both CDMA). Which one do you think they use? ;P

Look at the coverage map it is almost exactly the same as Vodafone's 3G network.

Pretty sure Vodafone can detect what devices are connected to their network, so that wouldn't work so well.

my info was incorrect. web browsing via experimental browser is free which is what I just read at amazon's info page.

yes.. but the experimental browsing is only available in the USA as far as I know

it reminds me when the power companies came out with the "smart meters" that used the cellphone network to ring home to update the company, people got smart and removed the sim from the meter and used it to ring people and use data in 3g cards. it was rather funny when the installer told me that story
