hi guys, Im going to sign up for the fusion package. Im going to buy a VOIP Linksys phone and dump on old near dead handset.
OK, so I dont need a special VOIP adsl modem do I? Everything on the hardware page shows modems/gateways with analogue ports. Surely I dont need that. What is a linksys adsl gateway for me ?

No you will be fine with a VOIP Linksys / Cisco phone, generally most people like their cordless phones so want a ATA (Voip to Analogue Adapator) or a router with the adaptor combined.

With your device best bet is to also put the Phone on a static IP as well

thanks for that. I wonder if I could use my existing thomson st5x6v6 and just open a port on the firewall to enable voip packets to pass back to the phone. I saw a dlink in h-norman this afternoon that said it was voip ready. is this nothing more then the ability top open the firewall for vopi and some traffic priority? As you can see, trying to keep hardware costs down as not a lot of work on at the moment.

Generally most newer routers handle SIP nating pretty well, so possibly you will not need to do any port forwarding.

Most likely your Thomson should be fine so this should save you some costs.
