I am seriously thinking about ditching my TCL digital TV service (my new HTPC makes it somewhat redundant) and getting cable modem instead. I am somewhat nervous after reading all of the bad comments about the cable modem service.

The question is, are there people out there who have had a *positive* experience with the service? Anyone have a nice uninterrupted service, good connection speeds, good responses from TCL? Or should I just stick with dialup? :)

I have been using TCL for six years or longer, and only now had problems. It's quite a long good record, I'd say.

My cable modem was replaced today, and the technician says he couldn't see anything wrong with the other devices or service in this area, so let's hope it's really just a malfunctioning piece of hardware.

I use the phone, TV and cable modem service, currently on a 10Mbps plan. Never had problems with the phone or TV service, and the cable modem has been reliable except for the last couple of days.

Mmm, maybe with all the teething problems with the new system I should just wait a few months and see how things pan out.

I've had a cable modem for around 8 years now and have had very few problems over the years. There were continual problems during December & Jan with routers locking up because of excessive ARP traffic on the network and there does seem to be a problem at the moment with some very short micro outages randomly occuring but I am aware of TCL suffering some severe DoS attacks on the cable network again recently so this could be the cause. Speed is very good both downstream & upstream - last year I used to quite regularly stream video at around 350kbps to a friend overseas and he used to get a rock solid connection (my connection is 512kbps upstream all new plans are 2mbps peak upstream).

i wouldn't go back to DSL even if it were paid for (well...). I love my cable, only had one issue in 18 months or so.

I would go to DSL if there was an option for 10Mbps. The limited cable service availability is a pain.

But it's so much faster when you get to those speeds...

Well, not only that - I work from home, and the Geekzone server has a script to backup SQL database, web server files, etc every day to the provider's backup server and to my server at home. This is about 1GB New Zealand traffic every day.

First, it has to be fast. Second those 10GB and 20GB plans on DSL are not even the start, if they count local NZ traffic as full.

But these are my requirements, we have to hear more from Mutly's...

I am thinking cable modem as I already have phone and TV via the cable. The low latency appeals to the gamer in me, and the speed and data caps appeal to my, umm, dark side...

That said, I would only be going for a 2Mb plan anyhow, but if i went for DSL I would have to change my phone would I not? Was sure the Telecom cables into the house were disconnected when they installed my current Phone/TV pack....

Correct you would have to change your phone. The cables will still be there. I have both TCL and Telecom cables to my house. Not difficult to switch provider.

Fair enough on the speed side of things.

He would have to change his phone and then also switch to Sky as well since you can't have Saturn TV by itself if he switched both phone and internet to Telecom.

In that case I really can't see the point in going to DSL. I'll just sit back for a while and see how the cable issues pan out.
