Ok what do i mean..

WM5 Jas jar

When I go Start > Settings > Phone > network

Netwok selection is "Automatic"

I have seen two networks "vodafone NZ" and "UTMS Vodafone". My automatic selection always seams to be the UTMS one, which is not as strong as the other one. I get the "vodafone NZ" network my bars ( bars under the phone funnel thing ) are much stronger than the UTMS one's.

I seamed to have forced the selection by going to >band and selected "GSM",GSM band = "EGSM+DCS1800"

The UTMS ban is grayed out.

I dunno what it has done, but I get email, phone, internet a lot better.

SO WHAT HAVE I DONE THEN ???

Whats this UTMS ?? Will I be ok ?

What is the EMAIL ENEVLOPE THING with an arrow, well what are all of them any documentation around on this comm manager tool ?

I have the Phone, speaker and email thing green all other grayed out, is that correct ???

You have essentially forced your phone from 3G mode (UMTS) into 2G GSM only mode. This means you are using GPRS which is should give you worse connection speeds (around 20-30kbps vs 250kbps) and higher latency times.

Unless you are in a poor coverage area and the low 3G signal results in connections dropping out you should probably keep 3G mode on, seems rather pointless having a 3G device if you're going to run it in 2G mode.

That's right. But for what I know Digs has been having connection problems. Sometimes it connects, sometimes the device shows an error or interrupts a connection.

I think Digs is on a regio with poor 3G coverage and the device is not doing a good work on falling back to GPRS in that area...

Leaving UMTS on is a good idea, but perhaps he can manually change it when in a bad reception area.

My network type...is currently only GSM.

Sorry I have UMTS OFF

I have the GSM ON...

So UMTS = 3G

and

GSM = 2G

So the automatic switch btw 2G and 3G is not that good. Thus it will always try to pull 3G even if its poor performance before it swings over to 2G. I guess the algorithm is not that smart.

Any one to comment on my COMM Manager question...

I went back to the AUTO signal of either 3G or 2G ( ie UTMS and GMS) and the signal seams much stronger than what I was getting on Saturday and Sunday. Is it possible vodafone SAVE MONEY by allowing signal to reduce over the week end, or may be it just does as there is more usage or not.

Because I am at my desk in the basement, same place different time and I now have 4 strong bars, not two as it was yesterday ( under the phone thing )...SO DOES VODAFONE play with signal strength... Well I l know Sky Tv does.

Facts...
Sunday 8.00 pm 2 bars
Monday 6.30 am 4 bars

Same location at my desk

Or may be it was more cloudy on the weekend.

Any ideas

I have noticed on both my V600i and a N70 that in some low 3G signal areas that 3G is unusable for both voice and data I've encountered it at friends place in Seatoun and has 2 signal bars yet 3G is continually unusable, I have to switch back to GSM mode to make a call or use data.

The same issue seems to occur in Queensgate where the cellphone coverage is hopeless, both phones were staying in 3G mode with 1 signal bar and not dropping back to GSM mode and I couldn't even send a txt or make a voice call. Walking into Woolworths forced the phones to both drop into GSM mode but walk too far into Woolworths and GSM doesn't work either so then things were even worse!

This problem doesn't seem to happen on all sites, I have been in Wgtn with low coverage and 3G has worked worked fine with 1-2 bars.

This is one of the great "features" of a CDMA network called breathing. Unlike GSM the size of a cell can change depending on the number of phones connected and the power output from those phones.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by Sky TV playing with signal strength though, there is nothing they need to play with.

Yipee I am not the only lost sole out there...

It just went back to 2 bars so I manually switched to GSM only. GSM seams more stable.

It seams I must do a SOFT RESET to force my email down and refresh internet connections, with a low bar count. I have studied the vodafone coverage map and I am good. But Auckland is patchy..so beware newbies.

I will search the internet for a tool that placed on my today screen "the current network provider" so i can see if I am getting 2G or 3G...

IS Telecom Apache better , I suppose a stronger signal from T3G via vodafone is the only fix. Then I will have to buy a new JAS JAR 5000 or whatever..dam

There is no way to say the Telecom Apache is better than the Vodafone Jasjar. It will depend on your use - and ocation.

You say you are in a basement. As you areware the Voidafone coverage seems to have some issues around Auckland, os it could be a combination of being in a basement and a poor network coverage on that specific place.

No, I don't think neither Vodafone nor Telecom change signal strength, so I believe it's location and coverage issues there.

I am not sure what's the icon with two arrows, but I think it has to do with checking e-mails on a cycle. I am not sure, it is disabled on my Jasjar since I use Direct Push (the envelope with one arrow only).

Is there a carkit avalable for the Jasjar? If so they maybe able to use a car cradle/external antenna cable and connect to to an antenna mounted on the side of the house. I have seen this done before, though with a Sony Ericsson. (Usually the phone would be used with the speakerphone or a BT headset)
