Seriously though, it depends on what you are trying to do. For e-mail, a single connection to a specific server it will be probably ok.

For web browsing, where more tan one connection is usually active, you will notice that high latency will impact.

Also, if your coverage is not perfect it will be impacted.

Other than this, not much can be done...

Can you do a speed test so we can confirm you are getting the expected speeds (which as freitasm says, is slow anyway).

Another good (local) speed test is provided by NZDSL.

I wouldn't expect anything past 42Kbps on GPRS. Probably less than this.

What type of device or phone are you using? There are different classes of GPRS access dependant on the device you use which affects the downlink and uplink speed.

I never tested. I am saying that it won't be more than this.

There is a problem though, and it's called Vodafone Optimiser. Most Speed Tests will only "see" the connection from their server to the Vodafone Optimiser proxy. I've read people claiming hundreds of kilobits on their GPRS connection, which obviously was from the test server to the proxy...

So there's still no APN without the optimiser? Voda told me last year they're configuring one... that was in August. What about web.vodafone.net.nz ?

www.vodafone.net.nz is a NAT, Optimiser enabled APN
web.vodafone.net.nz is a non-NAT, Optimiser enabled APN
direct.vodafone.net.nz is a NAT, non-Optimiser APN

You should not use the non-NAT directly, because of limited IP addresses, and they are suitable for VPN.

Nope

The optimiser all it does is strip and compress your images so your web pages look ugly but on a VMCC dashboard you can adjust that.

Great for a text email but its a dialup account compared to T3G or 3G by Vodafone

Never was a solution to move data quickly or great amounts. If you want to do web surfing or downlaod pictures or send attachments upgrade your phone to T3G or 3G by Vodafone.

Remember thoe Vodafones next path upgrade is HSDPA which is newer handsest again from their current 3G mobiles apart from the newer Vodfone Mobile Connect Cards you see in the Uk that are HSDPA 3G and there are upgrades coming for T3G as well.

The more data you move the higher the cost doing it via mobile and for data movers a laptop and a T3G are still the way to go.

That's a very good point, considering just how much mobile data costs on both the telcos' networks. I don't however believe Vodafone's NAT'ed APNs have any kind of firewalling - and NAT by itself doesn't qualify as a firewall. It makes it a little bit harder for miscreants, but not much. On the other hand, Vodafone assigns a dynamic IP address; not sure what the lease time is, but you'd be pretty unlucky or rich enough to stay on the 'Net for a long time, to attract attention.

Telecom's T3G service uses routable IP addresses, so the same thing applies.
