Is anyone else having speed issues on wellington telstra cable downloading games from steam?

On TCL adsl in chch, I have had the same problem downloading from AUS i tried every server ect , I did then try a steam official server in the states and went from 9k to 300k so just fiddle around with the content servers in the settings but avoid AUS servers,

On the other hand youtube on highly viewed videos are not loading then crawling... I think something wrong connection wise ( well the youtube things are to do with the cache servers no doubt.

Had that issue last week. I ended up buying access to a USA VPN for the day, speeds went from 200 to 700. I was downloading on peek though

What DNS are you folks with problems using? Have you tried 203.697.78.43 and 203.97.78.44?

So im not the only one! I've been trying various aus servers too, and have gone from averaging 45k up to 400k by changing to US servers.

my dns servers are 203.96.152.4/12, are the ones you suggested just alternate telstra ones?

You should be using the ones I suggested, Clearnet ones. I found them a lot more reliable and updated.

Are these DNS servers recommended for chch customers because I noticed from running a ping test that the clearnet DNS servers had a slightly higher latency than the standard 203.96.152.4 that we're using here in chch.

I think the higher latency won't impact much, because once it's resolved your PC will cache for a while. Also since I find them more reliable they instantly win for me.

I've been using 8.8.8.8 and 203.96.152.12. Are these clearnet ones better than the google dns?

Thanks, I originally did it because TCL DNS was having problems with zero punctuation videos... I'll give clearnet ones a go and see if I can hit the escapist.

If you use anything but your ISP's own DNS then you won't take any advantage of CDNs and cache.

For example using 8.8.8.8 you completely bypass the local TelstraClear Google cache, impacting in YouTube performance. Also it will break your requests to sites using CDNs, including Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple (including iTunes). That's because the Google DNS will resolve to a default address instead of the one closes to you.

You should not use a third party DNS if you rely on local caches.
