Well, we're not very good at keeping secrets, but at the risk of sounding like we're late to the party, we'd like to let you all know that we have a server in place that is almost ready to go live!

From a design perspective we've chosen to open our content server to all ISP's, mirror all available content (so just about anything you want should be available) and run it as part of our unmetered service to TelstraClear residential broadband customers (with some important limitations for people to be aware of).

There are a few separate things that need to happen behind the scenes so that the server pushes out the kind of performance you all expect. We can't commit to a firm date but plan to be ready for you all to catch up on some Steam Summer Sale downloads in a few weeks!

If people are interested in knowing technical specifics, we can pass on some questions to our design team.  If you want to learn more about Steam, or plan to utilise the unmetered downloads visit our Steam info page at http://telstraclear.co.nz/sub-sites/gaming-steam/ make sure to register so we can inform you when it goes live and more.

Other discussions about specific applications that can assist you with managing your steam traffic usage may be best discussed in the ON3 Network forums, or hit up our games guy @simcore on Twitter. Cheers for your patience guys, hope you enjoy it!

Thanks guys,
Tim

Thanks for the news!
You're right, your secrets suck... but at least you came through in the end!

ps: don't let it be a "t-box"...

So other ISPs can buy your bandwidth (while they offer you access to their network for free) so they can get this free service.. Nice :)

Sounds like an Expensive Blade has been commissioned  and at least a 1Gig pipe for the traffic... Will have to find out more info from the tech guys at work but i am loving the sound of it.

I havnt seen anything to indicate Orcon's is going to be a public server. AFAIK it's only for Orcon customers. Slingshot has had a slingshot only one for some time, and Xnet previously had one via recoil.

To the best of my knowledge TC's will be the first PUBLIC steam content server in NZ. Which is great news, it means even people not on clear should get great download speeds form steam in NZ now. Being unmetered for us TC customers ist just the icing on the cake.

Kudos to you TC, even if it has taken you guys forever to actually reach this point.

Yeah I realise Orcons is not public, but it will be unmetered for orcon customers. Datacaps seem to be the biggest issue with steam not the lack of local content servers.
I dont know about anyone else, but having free steam data will play a large part of which ISP I choose or stay with.

Great news, means I won't have to take my pc into work for steam downloads after each of the big sales, 50 gig was a tad too much to add on to our monthly usage at home, would've equated to $150 overage charges.
