Same problem as the other day? E.g International sites not loading, DNS Failures.

Currently browsing via a NZ based VPN, only way to make my net work :(

Using google DNS seems to make local sites work, otherwise EVERYTHING gets DNS errors

Anyone got anymore info about this?

EDIT:

Working as of 11:31 PM

Just back up after about 2hrs down time.

No access to international and the only local sites I could access were Massey & Victoria University with the VF DNS. Skype was working fine though.

Yea boss had a problem with Vodafone mobile BB and DNS resolution. Got them to connect using the IP of Terminal Server running on Orcon and got them running on that.

So anyone know what the issue was this time? Hurricane Electric and DoS again?

Yeah it just came up for me again.

No DNS but my torrents and IRC kept going.

Interestingly enough the Google DNS servers weren't working for me either, but openDNS did

Yeah I had same issues on my landline and my mobile no access to any sites. Thought it might have been the 5 chorus vans messing with my exchange this morning. Obviously not...

This was my first time having issues, why has this happened in the past.

From my own personal investigations I have found this to be an issue with the Vodafone NZ transparent proxy. This is exactly the reason that you cannot use your own custom DNS provider. How could the proxy request the page on its side if it didn't have its own dns? It can't! What appears to have happened here is that was a failure in the transparent proxy. I could still perform DNS lookups and could connect to websites on the IP and HTTPS worked but trying to access any pages on HTTP port 80 with a domain name (what I assume would be cached) did not work. This is the reason that Skype continued to work, as it did for me, as well as SSH and DNS, among other things.

I would like to have more people reporting the faults in www.geekzone.co.nz/FaultByISP.asp please. This is one way we have to make it visible in a single place, when things go bad, so everyone else knows too.

This is what we have for Vodafone now: www.geekzone.co.nz/FaultByISP.asp?ISPId=2&action=View+report

Yes and the outage was not related to HE in anyway or a DOS attack

What's the point?  How is this information useful to anyone once the outage has been fixed?  Users have already called the call center, Vodafone already know it's a problem?  Can you share your thinking with us?

Really?

It could be used to find out which ISP suffers the most outages? That may influence which provider you choose?

I find it useful for me just in case its my set up and not a nationwide thing. Normally (dear I say it) I try and not restart my modem because very seldom is that the case!

It's either one of my computers going weird, or more upstream than my house.  In which case the 'one-stop-shop' faults page is very convient- if people use it of course!
